No. 21 Baseball falls to No. 19 Stanford in ninth, 3-2

The Longhorns led for most of the ballgame but Stanford rallied for three runs in the final four innings to complete the comeback.
PALO ALTO, Calif.—Despite leading for most of the ballgame, No. 21 Texas Baseball (7-4) fell 3-2 to No. 19 Stanford (7-3) on Friday night at Sunken Diamond.
The Longhorns got on the board early in the ballgame. Zane Gurwitz opened things up with a single before Tyler Rand took a four-pitch walk. After Bret Boswell laid down a sacrifice, Kacy Clemens' RBI groundout plated Gurwitz from third. Travis Jones then followed with a single to center to score Rand and give the Longhorns a 2-0 advantage.
Cooper was solid through six innings of work, notching his third straight quality start. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits and one walk while fanning five.
Stanford pulled to within one in the sixth when, after the Cardinal loaded the bases with one out, Mikey Diekroeger lifted a fly ball to right, scoring Duke Kinamon from third.
The following inning, the Cardinal challenged the Longhorns again. Sophomore Chase Shugart came on in relief in the seventh and, after a strikeout to open the frame, allowed a single, a walk, and a hit batter to load the bases, prompting a pitching change. Jake McKenzie entered and induced a pair of groundouts, but Stanford managed to the tie the ballgame, 2-2.
McKenzie worked a three-pitch eighth inning but after allowing a leadoff double to open the bottom of the ninth, he exited in favor of left-hander Jon Malmin. The next batter attempted a sacrifice bunt but Malmin got the lead runner at third for the first out of the inning.
Malmin then walked the next Stanford batter before Beau Ridgeway entered in relief. After getting a soft lineout to put two away, the Cardinal got a single up the middle to win the ballgame.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT. RHP Kyle Johnston will get the start for the Longhorns.
