The Cardinal scored five over the first two frames and never trailed in the game.
AUSTIN, Texas—A four-run second inning helped send No. 23 Texas Baseball to a 9-3 loss at the hands of No. 7 Stanford on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (9-6) will go for the series split with the Cardinal (13-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Stanford got on the board in the first off Blair Henley (2-1) thanks to a defensive miscommunication. Up 1-0, Stanford tacked on four more in the second frame to put the Longhorns in an early hole.
After the Texas bats were silenced the first time through the order, the fourth inning saw them respond. After Masen Hibbeler doubled with one away, Kody Clemens drew a walk. Designated hitter Zach Zubia proceeded to take the 3-1 offering from Erik Miller over the left field wall for his third homer of the season and first at home.
With the score at 5-3 after four, the two sides exchanged zeroes over the next four frames. In the ninth, however, the Cardinal put up four runs off Josh Sawyer and Beau Ridgeway to make it 9-3. Despite getting a pair aboard in the ninth, the Longhorns were unable to mount a comeback.
The final game of this four-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
