AUSTIN, Texas—No. 23 Texas Baseball dropped the series finale, 11-1, to No. 7 Stanford on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The defeat sends the Longhorns (9-7) to their first home series loss of the season.
Stanford (14-2) got out in front in the top of the first thanks to a three-run homer off of Chase Shugart. After the first, Shugart (0-2) settled in to throw four hitless frames before exiting with no outs in the top of the sixth. Bryce Elder entered in relief and walked two and allowed a base hit before he was relieved without recording an out. Senior Jake McKenzie followed to finish the inning and the Longhorns trailed, 9-0, after six complete.
The Cardinal picked up another run in the seventh thanks to an RBI single, this time off Matteo Bocchi.
In the seventh, Texas put a run on the board. Masen Hibbeler singled to lead off the inning and, after a pitching change, Kody Clemens drew a walk. When the catcher played the ball using his mask, both runners were then awarded a base each. Zach Zubia followed with an RBI groundout and the Longhorns trailed it, 10-1.
Freshman Kamron Fields made his first career pitching appearance and worked a one-two-three eighth inning, but Stanford tacked on one more in the ninth off Bryce Verplank and Texas dropped Sunday's finale, 11-1.
Texas returns to action on Tuesday night in the first of two games at No. 5 Arkansas.
