No. 23 Baseball falls, 6-2, to Northwestern in series opener

The Longhorns left 10 on base in the Friday night loss to the Wildcats.
AUSTIN, Texas—On Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, No. 23 Texas Baseball (5-4) came up short against visiting Northwestern (3-4), dropping the series opener by a 6-2 final.
The Wildcats got on the board first off of starter Chase Shugart. In the second frame, Shugart (0-1) walked the leadoff man and Northwestern made him pay with back-to-back one-out singles to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Longhorns answered in the bottom of the third, however, when their own leadoff walk crossed the plate. Michael McCann drew a free pass to open the inning and, after a Duke Ellis infield single and a Masen Hibbeler hard-hit grounder, Kody Clemens followed with a bases-loaded, run-scoring groundout to knot the game at 1-1.
In the top of the fifth, Texas once again fell behind. A pair of hit by pitches and two hits in the inning put Northwestern up, 3-1.
The Longhorns got one back in the bottom of the inning when Zach Zubia doubled home Hibbeler to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Northwestern answered right back in the sixth. The Wildcats added a solo homer and a sac fly to push their lead to 5-2 and added another in the ninth to make it 6-2. The deficit would prove too much for the Longhorns to overcome and they dropped game one of the four-game set.
The Longhorns went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base in the game.
Texas and Northwestern return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
