Baseball takes 5-4 Monday night win over McNeese State

The Longhorns got out in front early and hung on for the win.
AUSTIN, Texas—Texas Baseball (18-12) took advantage of several McNeese State (10-18) miscues and Ryan Reynolds hit a two-run bomb to give the Longhorns a 5-4 win on Monday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Freshman right-hander Matthew Whelan made his first career start for Texas and was solid on the hill. The Houston native went four innings on the hill before exiting with no outs in the fifth. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks.
In the third, the Longhorns offense got to work. Jake McKenzie opened the inning with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a groundout. After a failed pickoff attempt moved McKenzie to third, the McNeese State second baseman dropped a fly ball in shallow right to plate McKenzie and put Texas up 1-0. One batter later, Reynolds launched his third home run of the season over the left-center field wall to give Texas a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth, David Hamilton doubled to open the frame and, after a fielder's choice, scored on a McKenzie RBI groundout to make it 4-0. Kody Clemens followed with an RBI groundout of his own and Texas led, 5-0, after four complete.
In the top of the fifth, McNeese State plated three. Two runs scored via the home run before Parker Joe Robinson (1-0) entered in relief. After Robinson overthrew first to make it 5-3, the redshirt-junior settled in to pitch two scoreless for his first career win.
McNeese added one in the seventh off Matteo Bocchi, but Josh Sawyer pitched a scoreless eighth and Andy McGuire moved from right field to the mound in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season.
Hamilton finished 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, and two hit by pitches. He also swiped his 17th base of the season, tying him for the most steals among Big 12 Conference hitters.
The Longhorns return to action on Tuesday night with a 6:30 p.m. contest against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at Whataburger Field.
