AUSTIN, Texas—Two big innings helped No. 19 Texas Baseball (29-15) secure a 9-4 win over visiting Houston (25-16) on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Though the Longhorns managed just four hits in the ballgame, they took advantage of four walks, four hit by pitches, and one costly Houston error in the third and fourth frames.
Down 3-0 after two innings, catcher DJ Petrinsky got things started in the home half of the third with a base hit up the middle. Duke Ellis, who finished with a pair of hits on the night, then followed with a four-pitch walk before Jake McKenzie reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to load the bases with no outs.
Tate Shaw then wore the first pitch from Lael Lockhart (1-1) in his back to force in the Longhorns' first run. The next pitch sailed into the foot of Masen Hibbeler to pull Texas to within one at 3-2. With one out and the bases loaded, Zubia worked a full count walk to plate the game-tying run before a David Hamilton sacrifice fly put Texas on top, 4-3.
The next inning, Texas added to its lead. Petrinsky once again led off the inning with a base hit and Ellis followed with a hit of his own to put the first two on. McKenzie was hit with yet another pitch to load up the bases and Shaw collected a walk to make it 5-3 Texas. After a wild pitch made it 6-3, Hibbeler walked to load them up once again. Kody Clemens was then plunked to make it 7-3 in favor of the Longhorns. Zubia then hit a groundball that the shortstop threw away to plate two and push the Texas lead to 9-3 after four innings of work.
Following 2.2 innings from Bryce Elder (5-1), Nico O'Donnell tossed 3.2 innings of solid baseball to keep Texas in front. He was charged with a run after a wild pitch from Matteo Bocchi allowed the runner from third to score but that would be all.
Houston threatened in the eighth off Josh Sawyer, but Hibbeler gunned down a runner at the plate from left to preserve the Texas lead.
Andy McGuire came on for the ninth and finished out the ballgame.
The Longhorns next hit the road this weekend for a three-game Big 12 Conference series against West Virginia in Morgantown.
