Box Score
OKLAHOMA CITY—No. 1 seed Texas Baseball (37-19) dropped its Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Championship opening round game, 3-2, to No. 8-seeded Kansas (27-28) on Wednesday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The Jayhawks got on the board first with a two-run fourth inning off starter Matteo Bocchi (3-1), who lasted just 3.1 innings in the loss.
The Longhorns answered back in the bottom of the fifth, however, plating a run on a DJ Petrinsky RBI single, but that would be all.
Freshmen Bryce Elder (0.2 IP) and Matthew Whelan (3.0 IP) were sharp on the hill for Texas, keeping it a one-run ballgame after seven complete. In the eighth, Kansas upped its lead to 3-1 thanks to a Devin Foyle solo homer off Josh Sawyer.
During its last ups, Texas rallied once again as Duke Ellis led off with a single and came around to score on a Ryan Reynolds base hit, but the Longhorns could not complete the comeback.
Texas returns to action on Thursday at 9 a.m. with an elimination matchup against fourth-seeded Oklahoma. Right-hander Nolan Kingham will take the mound for the Longhorns.
