The Details
It was Texas that put together the first chance for either team off a corner at 5:31 as sophomore defender Emma Regan fired wide right from distance.
The Longhorns had a great chance in the 11th-minute off a feed into the 18 from deep out on the right side by Regan. Brooks was waiting in space in the box, but her quick volley from 12 yards out went just outside the right post.
Against the run of play in the 17th-minute, TCU's Messiah Bright took off on a quick counter. Tightly marked by UT senior defender Atu Mshana, Bright drove into the 18 and got off the Horned Frogs' first shot. Texas junior goalkeeper Savannah Madden raced out to cut down the angle, however, and made her first save of the night.
TCU created more danger at 19:26 as a pass up the left wing found Grace Collins in space. With a Texas defender rallying to pressure, her eventual shot from eight yards rolled wide left.
The Horned Frogs continued to settle more into the contest as Bright barely missed wide right on a shot from a sharp left wing angle at 25:49. Off a subsequent corner kick, Payton Crews then ricocheted a shot from the right wing off the top of the crossbar.
After Texas' Brooks fired over the woodwork from 25 yards out at 29:15, Bright got into a 1-v-1 situation for TCU back at the other end at 30:47. Madden again raced off her line to cut down the angle and slid to deflect a shot out of danger.
The Longhorns came close to finding an opener at 37:11 as Regan delivered another terrific cross into the box. Tightly marked near the top of the six, Brooks tried a quick volley, but her chip popped straight up and over the bar.
After another Madden stop on a rocket near the right post in the 42nd-minute, TCU's Bright managed to direct a header on goal. The woodwork again proved unkind to the Horned Frogs, however, as the forward's shot rattled off the top of the crossbar.
Right out of the halftime break at 47:06, TCU threatened again as Gracie Brian leapt over a crowd inside the box to head a shot just outside the left post.
Bright came close again for the Horned Frogs at 50:12 as her low blast from the right side of the box scraped just outside the left upright.
In the 54th-minute, Texas' Regan delivered another solid feed inside the 18 to Brooks. The sophomore forward turned quickly in space, but her 14-yard effort traveled right to TCU keeper Emily Alvarado.
Two more great crosses nearly located Brooks in the middle of the box during the 59th- and 60th-minutes, but both proved just a foot too far in front to get off a shot.
The Longhorns created two more solid chances in the 69th- and 73rd-minutes as senior forward Cyera Hintzen forced a save on a 25-yard shot, and then freshman forward Sydney Nobles fired wide left from 20.
UT hearts picked up speed during the 76th-minute as a TCU cross from the right wing nearly got deflected into the Texas net for an own goal. Madden dove down quickly to her right near the goal line to corral the dangerous bouncer.
Action continued to pick up as Texas junior midfielder Haley Berg and redshirt junior forward Cydney Billups had consecutive shots blocked in the 80th-minute.
At the other end, Madden again stood tall in net as she was positioned perfectly to stop another Bright shot (81:23), and just seconds later, raced off her line to slide and stop a building 1-v-1 opportunity from the right wing.
Both teams rattled the crossbar late in regulation as Berg bounced a 23-yard effort off the woodwork at 85:00, while Bright struck the bar from the right wing at 88:21.
Just 38 seconds into the first OT, Brooks got clear inside the 18 for the Horns, but her quick flicked header off a cross was caught out of the air by Alvarado.
In the 104th-minute during the second OT, a Texas foul granted TCU a dangerous chance about 28 yards out. A shot was blasted off the UT defensive wall, but bounced straight out into the right side of the 18. Collins followed with a shot that Madden managed to parry to her right before the Longhorns could clear it away.
Once the teams got to penalties, both Texas and TCU were good on their first spot kicks as Regan scored for the Longhorns into the left upper 90. After that, UT's second attempt was stopped by Alvarado, the third struck the right post and the fourth was tipped by the keeper and ricocheted off the left post. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs were successful on all three of their attempts to advance on to the semifinals, 3-1.
