AUSTIN, Texas – Matteo Bocchi pitched three hitless innings of relief to lead No. 14 Texas Baseball to a 3-1 win over Rice Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The win was the 300^th of head coach David Pierce's career. Pierce has compiled a career record of 300-169 in eight seasons as a head coach.

Bocchi came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning and pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season. The senior struck out three batters and the only base runner he allowed was a hit batter.

Texas got a run across in the first inning after Duke Ellis started the game with a triple off the wall in left field and came around to score on an RBI single by Austin Todd. Ellis finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Rice tied the game up in the top of the third inning, using a pair of two-out singles off of Texas starter Ty Madden. Madden pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits.

The Longhorns got the run right back in the bottom of the third inning to retake the lead, 2-1. Michael McCann started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ellis. Lance Ford drove in McCann with an RBI single through the infield.

Tristan Stevens came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning to get the Longhorns out of a jam. With runners at second and third and one out, Stevens got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Texas added a run to its lead in the sixth inning after Ellis and Ford both singled to start the inning. The run came home on a double play to make the Texas lead 3-1.

Brandon Ivey got the first two outs of the eighth inning before giving way to Donny Diaz, who finished the game to pick up his first save of the season.
