No. 6 Men’s Golf wins NCAA Austin Regional by 20 strokes

AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 6 Texas Men's Golf team recorded a nine-under-par 275 on Wednesday to win the NCAA Austin Regional by 20 strokes at The University of Texas Golf Club. Senior Steven Chervony and freshman Cole Hammer each fired a five-under-par 66 in Wednesday's final round to share co-medalist honors with TCU's Stefano Mazzoli.
Texas concluded Wednesday's play with a 54-hole score of 25-under-par 827 (278-274-275). No. 30 TCU placed second at five-under-par 847 (280-292-275), and No. 19 Clemson finished third at one-under-par 851 (284-284-283).
No. 18 Pepperdine placed fourth at six-over-par 858 (278-290-290), while No. 7 USC rallied to grab the fifth and final team qualifying spot at eight-over-par 860 (290-288-282). No. 31 Arkansas finished just below the cut line in sixth place at 13-over-par 865 (282-291-292). The top five teams at the Austin Regional advance to the 2019 NCAA Championship, set for May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Ark.
In the individual standings, Chervony, Hammer and Mazzoli each tallied 54-hole scores of nine-under-par 204. Pepperdine's Joe Highsmith placed fourth at six-under-par 207, while USC's Sam Kim was fifth at four-under-par 209.
Only 15 individuals in the 75-player field finished below par in the 54-hole tournament. Texas had four players among those 15 individuals, as freshman Parker Coody tied for 11th at one-under-par 212 (70-72-70). All five Longhorn players finished in the top 20 in the individual standings.
In addition to the five qualifying teams, Arkansas' Julian Perico tied for sixth at three-under-par 210 (67-72-71) to earn his spot in the NCAA Championship field as the low individual from a non-advancing team.
The Lineup
- Senior Steven Chervony fired his second-straight five-under-par 66 and earned co-medalist honors at nine-under-par 204 (72-66-66). Chervony recorded his first career collegiate victory. His previous career-best finish was third place at the Gopher Invitational earlier this year (Sept. 9-10, 2018). He made five birdies (4, 7, 10, 12, 13 and 15) and one bogey (16).
- Freshman Cole Hammer registered a five-under-par 66 and shared medalist honors at nine-under-par 204 (70-68-66). This marked the third time in his freshman season that Hammer tied for first in the individual standings (Southern Highlands and Lamkin Classic). He made five birdies (3, 5, 9, 10 and 11) and did not make a bogey.
- Freshman Pierceson Coody recorded a two-over-par 73 to finish in a tie for eighth at two-under-par 211 (66-72-73).
- Freshman Parker Coody tallied a one-under-par 70 to tie for 11th place at one-under-par 212 (70-72-70). He made four birdies (8, 11, 14 and 18) and three bogeys (3, 5 and 16).
- Junior Spencer Soosman recorded a three-over-par 74 and finished in a tie for 20th place at four-over-par 217 (75-68-74).
