No. 5 Men’s Golf in eighth place after opening round at NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 10-over-par 298 on Friday afternoon to stand in eighth place after the opening day of the NCAA Championships at Blessings Golf Club. Freshman Parker Coody recorded an even-par 72 to pace the Longhorns and is tied for 12th place in the individual standings after the first 18 holes.
UT is just eight strokes behind first-round leader Oklahoma State, who registered a two-over-par 290. Stanford is second at three-over-par 291, while Auburn and Cal are tied for third at four-over-par 292.
Cal's Collin Morikawa shot a five-under-par 67 and holds a two-stroke lead in the individual standings. Utah's Kyler Dunkle, Oklahoma State's Austin Eckroat and Arizona State's Chun An Yu each recorded a three-under-par 69 and are tied for second place. Only 20 individuals in the 156-player field scored even or below par in Friday's opening round.
The 2019 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 27, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 28, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28.
The Lineup
- Freshman Parker Coody is tied for 12th place at even-par 72. Coody recorded four birdies during his opening round (1, 2, 10 and 15). He has posted 15 rounds of par or better in 25 total rounds this season.
- Freshman Cole Hammer is tied for 36th place at three-over-par 75. Hammer tallied three birdies in his opening round (2, 10 and 15).
- Senior Steven Chervony is also tied for 36th place at three-over-par 75. Chervony carded three birdies in his opening round (4, 10 and 15).
- Junior Spencer Soosman is tied for 53rd place at four-over-par 76. He registered a pair of birdies (2 and 5) and was one-under on the front nine.
- Freshman Pierceson Coody is tied for 129th place at nine-over-par 81.

The second round of the NCAA Championships will be played on Saturday, May 25 at Blessings Golf Club. The Longhorns will be paired again with Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, and tee times will begin at 7:12 a.m. CT from hole 10.
