AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Cross Country teams face nationally ranked competition in a storied track and field locale on Saturday, when they compete in the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Oregon.
The Longhorn men take on six competitors ranked in the top 30 by the U. S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT in an 8,000-meter race. Second-ranked BYU, No. 7 Portland and No. 11 Oregon highlight the field. Texas is currently ranked second in the South Central Region and received 15 votes in the latest national poll.
The Horns dominated their first two meets of the year, with junior Sam Worley winning the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational on Aug. 30, and then freshman Haftu Knight claiming the Texas Invitational title two weeks later. Both Worley and Knight were named the Big 12 Runner of the Week after their respective victories.
"We're really looking forward to running in Oregon this weekend," said UT distance coach Pete Watson. "It's a strong field that we'll be competing against and we're going to run some freshmen out there for the first time, so I'm excited to see how our guys perform and compete on Saturday."
The women's race promises to be just as challenging, as the Longhorns face five opponents ranked in the USTFCCCA national rankings when they cross the start line at 1:30 p.m. CT on a 6,000-meter course. Sixth-ranked BYU, ninth-ranked Oregon, and 13th-ranked Boise State lead the field. The Texas women, ranked second in the South Central Region, received 6 votes in the latest national poll.
The UT women also dominated their first two meets of the 2019 campaign. Senior Destiny Collins led the way for the Longhorns, winning both the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational on Aug. 30 and the Texas Invitational two weeks later. Collins was named the Big 12 Women's Runner of the Week after her win in Waco.
"The last two races have been great for us in terms of developing our student-athletes," said UT women's distance coach PattiSue Plumer. "This is our first big competition and it will give us an opportunity to see where we're at and what changes we'll need to make. It's good for us, because it's good for even our best runners to run out front and be running maybe harder than they've ever run and be in 12th, instead of going out comfortably and leading or being in the top five."
The Texas women will also take part in some local competition Friday night, as selected members of the team will run in the Concordia Cross Country Classic. The race begins at 6:30 p.m. CT at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, the same site as the Texas Invitational two weeks ago.
