The Longhorns won by eight shots on their home course this week.
AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 9 Texas Men's Golf team wrapped up its first win of the 2020-21 season on Tuesday, claiming an eight-shot win (-17; 853) in the George Hannon Collegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club. In addition, junior Pierceson Coody claimed medalist honors with a final score of 11-under par.
Coody's medalist honor is the first of his collegiate career, having previously never finished better than tied for second. He fired under par in all three rounds this week, opening with a 1-under 70 and 7-under 64 on Monday. Coody then capped his week with a 3-under 68 in Tuesday's final round.
Behind him, Cole Hammer and Mason Nome recorded top-10 finishes in the Longhorns' line. Hammer finished tied for third at 5-under, while Nome placed eighth at 3-under. It is the best finish by Hammer during the current campaign, and Nome's second-straight top 10 after tying for fifth at the Border Olympics earlier this month.
Texas also had three top-20 finishers competing as individuals on the Longhorns' home course this week. Will Thomson and Travis Vick each tied for ninth at 1-under, while Christoffer Bring battled back to tie for 20th at 3-over.
The victory at the George Hannon Collegiate marks the first win for Texas this season.
Texas is slated to return to competition this weekend, as the Longhorns head to Tucson, Ariz. to compete in the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club. The tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21.
