No. 5 Baseball sweeps Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 5 Texas Baseball pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits to complete the sweep of Kansas, 11-2, on Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark. The Longhorns improved to 20-8 this season with a 7-2 record in Big 12 Conference play.
Kolby Kubichek pitched in and out of trouble through six one-run innings to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out three batters in his six innings of work.
The Longhorns hit three homers in the game, first by Cam Williams, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ivan Melendez went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Mike Antico finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and his second homer of the season.
Texas opened the scoring with four runs in the third, after Mitch Daly and Erik Kennedy both singled to start the inning. Silas Ardoin drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI groundout before Cam Williams provided the big blow with a two-run homer to left-center.
Ivan Melendez kept the inning alive with a double to left-center field and Douglas Hodo III drove him in with an RBI single to center.
The Longhorns added two runs to the lead in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Trey Faltine walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kennedy. Daly drove in the run with an RBI groundout.
With two outs, Zach Zubia smashed a double to right field and Ardoin quickly followed with an RBI single to right field.
Kansas got one run back in the fourth but Kubichek was able to limit the damage by turning a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Texas extended the lead to 8-1 in the eighth after Ivan Melendez smashed a homer to lead off the inning and Kennedy drove in a run on fielder's choice groundout.
The Jayhawks got a run back in the eighth off of Tanner Witt, who pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run. Palmer Wenzel got the final two outs of the eighth with a groundball double play.
Mike Antico launched a three-run homer to right field to extend the lead to 11-2 in the top of the ninth.
Lucas Gordon pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to finish off the game.
Texas returns to UFCU Disch-Falk Field for a season long 10-game homestand, starting on Tuesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m.
