THE MATCHUPS—Texas kicks off a season-long 10-game homestand with a pair of non-conference matchups against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi faced off on March 2, with the Longhorns topping the Islanders, 12-1, at UFCU Disch Falk Field. Five Longhorn pitchers combined to allow only two hits to the Islanders' offense, while Zach Zubia and Mitchell Daly paced the offense with three-hit performances. Texas and Stephen F. Austin last met in 2012, with the Longhorns coming away with a 9-1 victory over the Lumberjacks. Texas leads the all-time series against Stephen F. Austin 8-0, with all eight games taking place in Austin.
A LOOK AT THE LONGHORNS—Texas swept a three-game series at Kansas over the weekend, the third-straight Big 12 Conference series win, improving to 7-2 in league play and taking sole possession of second place in the conference standings. The Longhorn bats came alive in Lawrence, smashing 10 extra-base hits, including three home runs on Sunday, to average over seven runs per game. Meanwhile, the pitching staff allowed only four runs in the series, including a combined eight-hit shutout by Tristan Stevens and Cole Quintanilla on Saturday. Texas is 20-5 over its last 25 games and has won six-straight series.
MAKING A BIG IMPRESSION—Ivan Melendez came up huge in Kansas, earning Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week after hitting .615 (8-of-13) in the series sweep with three doubles, a home run and two RBIs. The redshirt sophomore collected a hit in each of the three games, including a four-hit game and three-hit game in the final two contests. In 21 games this season, Melendez is batting .329 with six doubles, two homers, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored with seven multi-hit games.
QUICKER THAN QUICK—Mike Antico and Eric Kennedy are tied for the Big 12 Conference lead and rank 20th nationally with 12 stolen bases. As a team, the Longhorns have swiped 40 bases, which is second in the conference and ranks 21st in the nation. Additionally, Kennedy uses his speed regularly to get on base with 13 infield singles, including six bunt hits this season. In his career he has 37 infield hits (18 bunts).
FLASHING THE LEATHER—Trey Faltine has been a human highlight reel this season, making the difficult look routine. The Longhorns shortstop leads the Big 12 with 89 assists and is tied for 10th with 13 double plays while sporting a .977 fielding percentage in 131 chances.
DALY GETTING IT DONE—Mitchell Daly has been on a tear at the plate, hitting safely in 16 of the last 17 games. He has five multi-hit games in the last ten, raising his batting average to .400, a 94-point increase over that span. Daly ranks third in the Big 12 Conference in batting average and 9th in on-base percentage (.463). Last weekend against Kansas, he went 6-for-14 (428), with a double, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. The freshman currently leads the squad in batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS (.992), is second in hits (22) and slugging percentage (.529), and is fourth in total bases (37).
HAMMER KEEPS HAMMERING—Cam Williams crushed his team-leading seventh home run of the season in Texas' 11-2 win at Kansas on Sunday. Williams currently leads the team in total bases (55) and slugging percentage (.545) and is tied for the team lead in doubles (8). He is sitting second on the squad in RBIs (23) and is third in hits (29) and OPS (.884). Williams' seven home runs are tied for fourth in the Big 12 Conference and rank 50th nationally. His eight doubles are tied for sixth in the Big 12 and his 55 total bases are tied for 11th.
