OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – No. 2 Texas Baseball gave up a run in the top of the ninth and dropped a 5-4 decision to Oklahoma State in the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Championship on Saturday at Bricktown Ballpark.
The Longhorns (42-15) will turn their attention to the NCAA postseason and will learn their tournament seeding on the NCAA selection show on Monday at 11 a.m. CT.
Oklahoma State started the game with a triple and a double to grab a 1-0 lead in the first inning but starter Kolby Kubichek did well to limit the damage to just one run. Kubichek pitched 4.1 and allowed four runs on four hits and struck out two batters.
Texas battled back in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead on four hits, doing all the damage with two outs. Cam Williams lined a single to left field and stole second base before Douglas Hodo III hammered an RBI double to tie the game. Trey Faltine then hit an infield single to second base that was bobbled, allowing Hodo to score the go-ahead run.
The Cowboys came right back to retake the lead in the fifth inning after loading the bases with one out. Jared Southard came out of the bullpen into the bases-loaded jam and got a strikeout but a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score. A two-out two-run single to right field then gave OSU a 4-2 lead.
The Longhorns had an immediate answer to tie the game back up 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth. Dylan Campbell singled to start the inning, Mike Antico legged out a bunt single and both runners moved into scoring position on an error.
Mitchell Daly then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Campbell from third base and Silas Ardoin hit an RBI groundout to knot the game up.
Cole Quintanilla was stellar out of the bullpen, pitching three shutout innings with four strikeouts. He allowed just two base runners in his three innings of work.
Oklahoma State retook the lead, 5-4, in the top of the ninth on back-to-back two-out walks against reliever Aaron Nixon.
