HAVEN, Wis. — Former University of Texas stars Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth helped Team USA post a dominant 19-9 victory over Team Europe at the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. Texas and Florida State were the only colleges to produce a pair of U.S. Ryder Cup selections for this year's team.
The 19 points by the Americans were the most points earned in a single Ryder Cup since 1979. The U.S. team joins 2004 Europe and 2006 Europe as the only Ryder Cup teams since 1979 to not lose a session. It is also the first U.S. Ryder Cup team to not lose a session since 1977.
Making his Ryder Cup debut, Scheffler posted a 2-0-1 mark in his three matches over the weekend. Paired with Bryson DeChambeau in four-ball action on Friday afternoon, the U.S. duo tied Team Europe's tandem of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. Scheffler again teamed with DeChambeau in four-ball play on Saturday afternoon and earned a 3&1 victory against Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.
During Sunday's singles action, Scheffler concluded the weekend with an impressive 4&3 win against Jon Rahm, the world's current No. 1-ranked player. Scheffler was in control throughout Sunday's match, winning each of the first four holes to take a commanding 4-up advantage. Holding a 3-up lead after 14 holes, Scheffler closed out the match with a win on hole No. 15.
Spieth made his fourth appearance for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Paired with Justin Thomas in foursomes on Friday morning, the duo dropped a 3&1 decision to Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia. Spieth again teamed with Thomas in foursomes on Saturday morning and claimed a 2-up victory against Viktor Hovland and Bernd Wiesberger.
Paired with Brooks Koepka in four-ball action on Saturday afternoon, the duo fell by a 2&1 score to Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia. During Sunday's singles action, Spieth concluded the weekend with a tie against Tommy Fleetwood.
