Texas opened its fall campaign on Sept. 24 with a 22-0 (12 inn.) home rout of McLennan CC
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas softball preps to continue its fall season on Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field by hosting a 10-inning match-up against St. Mary's (6 p.m. CT).
Admission is free to all fans who wish to attend. There will be no television or radio broadcast coverage for the game against the Rattlers.
The Longhorns opened their 2022 fall slate last Saturday afternoon by routing McLennan Community College over 12 innings, 22-0. During the dominant victory, Texas banged out 24 hits, including 11 of the extra-base variety, while six pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout.
Sophomore transfer utility player Baylea Brandon (2-for-3, sac fly, double, five RBIs) and freshman infielder Viviana Martinez (2-for-4, double, three-run HR, four RBIs) did the major damage for the UT offense, while junior shortstop Alyssa Washington (3-for-6, sac fly, double, two RBIs), junior utility player Courtney Day (1-for-3, sac fly, double, two RBIs) and junior designated player Jordyn Whitaker (2-for-5, double, two RBIs) each knocked in two runs.
Guided by head coach Donna Fields, St. Mary's is coming off a 2022 spring season that saw the Rattlers post a 38-19 record on the way to a NCAA Division II South Central Regional berth.
Texas returns 15 players off last year's WCWS roster, including seven that played in at least 56 contests (five of those started at least 51 games).
Among the standouts back on the Forty Acres are 2022 NFCA All-Central Region and All-Big 12 Conference choice Mia Scott (.377 average, 64 starts, 77 hits, 62 runs, 14 doubles, five triples, four HR's, 25 walks, 26 steals, 38 RBIs), fellow 2022 All-Big 12 Conference honorees Alyssa Washington (.279 average, 63 starts, 30 runs, 48 hits, 15 extra-base hits, 22 walks, 35 RBIs), Katie Cimusz (.244 average, 57 starts, 38 hits, eight doubles, nine HR's, 15 walks, 32 RBIs) and Sophia Simpson (8-4 record, 3.57 ERA, 29 appearances, 16 starts, 105 strikeouts, 86.1 innings pitched) as well as 2022 WCWS All-Tournament Team selections Estelle Czech (13-2 record, 3.24 ERA, 30 appearances, 16 starts, 83 strikeouts, 103.2 innings pitched), Courtney Day (.300 average, 51 starts, 39 hits, 10 doubles, 12 HR's, 15 walks, 34 RBIs) and Bella Dayton (.276 average, 59 starts, 38 runs, 43 hits, nine doubles, five HR's, 24 walks, 14 steals, 23 RBIs).
Texas has also added seven players to the roster, including a pair of transfers and a five-member signing class that ranked No. 12 in the nation according to Extra Inning Softball's 2022 Top 100 College Rankings.
Joining the Burnt Orange & White from the transfer portal are former Arizona State sophomore right-handed pitcher Mac Morgan (18-3 overall record in 2022, 2.82 ERA, 22 starts, seven complete games, two solo shutouts and 75 strikeouts, 119 innings, .248 opponent batting average) and former LSU sophomore utility player Baylea Brandon (.280 batting average in 2022, three doubles, two HR's, 10 RBIs, .973 OPS).

The Longhorns signing class was ranked No. 12 in the nation as part of Extra Inning Softball's 2022 Top 100 College and all five players were listed among the top 75 of Extra Inning Softball's Extra Elite 100 player rankings: No. 3 (Martinez), No. 5 (Atwood), No. 17 (Goode), No. 36 (Gutierrez) and No. 75 (Pomykalski). Two players were No. 1 at their position among the nation's top recruits (Martinez – IF and Atwood – C), Goode and Pomykalski were No. 3 and No. 14 among infielders, respectively, while Gutierrez was No. 15 among pitchers. Softball America also ranked Martinez (No. 7) and Goode (No. 40) in its 2022 Top 100 Recruiting Rankings.
