No. 9 Men’s Golf advances to championship at Big 12 Match Play Tournament

The Longhorns finish pool play with a win against K-State before earning a victory over Oklahoma State in the semifinals.
HOCKLEY, Texas — The No. 9 Texas Men's Golf team won a pair of matches on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday's championship match at the 2023 Big 12 Match Play Tournament at the Clubs at Houston Oaks. The Longhorns completed pool play in the morning with a 3.5-1.5 win against K-State before earning a 3.5-1.5 victory over Oklahoma State in the bracket semifinals during the afternoon.
With the two wins, Texas advances to play No. 21 Baylor in the tournament's championship match on Wednesday beginning at 7:45 a.m. CT. The semifinals were originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday morning followed by the final round on Wednesday afternoon, but the threat of weather forced the tournament to play the semifinals on Tuesday afternoon and the championship round on Wednesday morning.
During Tuesday morning's pool play session against K-State, sophomore Keaton Vo posted a 4&3 win over Luke O'Neill and graduate Nathan Petronzio added a 2&1 victory against JP Roller. Graduate Brian Stark clinched the overall team win with a 1-up victory over Nick Mason, while sophomore Jacob Sosa halved his match against Alex Lindstrom.
The Longhorns earned the top seed in Pool A and advanced to play Oklahoma State, the winner of Pool D, in the bracket semifinals. In the afternoon match against the Cowboys, Stark posted a 4&2 victory over Preston Stout and sophomore Christiaan Maas added a 2&1 win against Gaven Lane. Sosa sealed the overall team win with a 1-up victory over Jonas Baumgartner, while sophomore Keaton Vo halved his match against Johnnie Clark.
Texas defeats K-State, 3.5-1.5
- Keaton Vo earned a 4&3 win over Luke O'Neill. Starting on hole 2, Vo faced a 1-down deficit after 10 holes but rallied to win holes 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 to close out the victory.
- Nathan Petronzio claimed a 2&1 victory against JP Roller. Starting on hole 2, the match was even after 14 holes. Petronzio won holes 16 and 18 to finish off the win.
- Brian Stark sealed the team win with a 1-up victory over Nick Mason. Starting on hole 1, Stark led by a 2-up margin through 15 holes. Mason won holes 16 and 17 to even the match, before Stark made a birdie on the closing 18th hole to win the match.
- Jacob Sosa tied his match against Alex Lindstrom. Starting on hole 3, Lindstrom built a 3-up lead through 11 holes before Sosa won holes 14, 16 and 1 to even the match. The two players halved the closing 2nd hole to finish in a tie.
- Cooper Schultz claimed a 3&2 victory over Christiaan Maas.
Texas defeats Oklahoma State, 3.5-1.5
- Brian Stark posted a 4&2 win over Preston Stout. Starting on hole 2, Stark won the opening hole and held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Stark added wins on holes 4 and 8 to build a 3-up lead before Stout answered with wins on holes 10 and 13 to trim the lead to 1-up after 12 holes. Stark responded with wins on holes 14, 16 and 17 to close out the match.
- Christiaan Maas tallied a 2&1 victory over Gaven Lane. Starting on hole 2, the match was all square through eight holes. Maas won holes 10, 11 and 12 to build a 3-up lead before Lane answered by winning holes 13 and 14 to trim the margin to 1-up through 13 holes. Maas won hole 17 to go 2-up and the two players halved hole 18 to finish off Maas' victory.
- Jacob Sosa clinched the overall team win with a 1-up victory against Jonas Baumgartner. Starting on hole 3, Sosa won the opening two holes and held the lead for the remainder of the match. Sosa built a 3-up lead after 14 holes before Baumgartner won holes 17 and 1 to close to 1-down. Sosa closed out the 1-up win after the two players halved the closing 2nd hole.
- Keaton Vo tied his match against Johnnie Clark. Starting on hole 1, the match was even through 15 holes. Clark won hole 16 and held a 1-up lead through 17 holes, but Vo made a birdie on the closing 18th hole to even the match.
- John Wild earned a 1-up victory over Nathan Petronzio.
