No. 5 Men’s Golf in third after opening day at The Williams Cup

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 4-under 284 on Sunday to rest in third place after the opening day of The Williams Cup at Eagle Point Golf Club. Sophomore Daniel Bennett fired a 4-under 68 and is tied for second in the individual standings, just one stroke off the lead.
In Sunday's round, Texas counted scores from Bennett (4-under 68), graduate Matt Comegys (2-under 70), senior Tommy Morrison (1-over 73) and sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (1-over 73) to post a team round of 4-under 284.
No. 14 Florida holds a seven-stroke lead in the team standings at 12-under 276, while Notre Dame is second at 5-under 283. The Longhorns are one stroke behind Notre Dame in third at 4-under 284. Only five of the 15 teams in the event recorded under-par team rounds on Sunday. The 15-team field features six squads in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Oct. 10).
Jacob Modleski of Notre Dame owns a one-stroke lead after the opening 18 holes with a 5-under 67. Bennett is part of a three-way tie for second at 4-under 68 along with Luke Poulter of Florida and North Carolina's Niall Sheils Donegan. Comegys is tied for 10th at 2-under 70.
The Williams Cup continues with 18 holes on Monday, Oct. 20 and concludes with a final round on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Texas will be paired with Florida and Notre Dame during Monday' second round and will tee off beginning at 8:55 a.m. Central (9:55 a.m. Eastern).
The Lineup
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett carded a 4-under 68 on Sunday and is in a three-way tie for second place in the individual standings, just one stroke off the lead. Bennett made birdies on holes 6, 10, 12 and 14 to climb to 4-under before a bogey on 15 dropped him to 3-under. He made pars on 16 and 17 and finished his round with a birdie on 18 to close out his round of 4-under.
- Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 2-under 70 in his opening round and is tied for 10th. Comegys had a bogey-free round on Sunday and recorded birdies on holes 5 and 9 to post his 2-under 70.
- Senior Tommy Morrison registered a 1-over 73 on Sunday and is tied for 29th. He made a pair of birdies (holes 6 and 16) in his opening round.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres recorded a 1-over 73 in his opening round and is tied for 29th. Derbez Torres made the turn at 3-over but rallied to post birdies on holes 10, 12 and 13 to climb back to even-par. He made bogey on hole 15 and closed with three-straight pars to finish at 1-over on the day.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 3-over 75 on Sunday and is tied for 55th. Maas tallied three birdies (holes 3, 12 and 14) in his opening round.
- Competing as an individual, senior Luke Potter carded a 1-under 71 in his opening round and is tied for 16th. Starting on the 10th hole, Potter made birdies at 12, 17 and 18 to make the turn at 3-under. He registered bogeys on holes 2 and 9 to close out his round of 1-under.
