No. 5 Men’s Golf in second after round two at The Williams Cup

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 1-under 287 on Monday to rest in second place after the second round of The Williams Cup at Eagle Point Golf Club. Sophomore Daniel Bennett fired a 1-under 71 in the second round and is tied for third in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 5-under 139 (68-71), just two strokes off the lead.
In Monday's round, Texas counted scores from Bennett (1-under 71), senior Tommy Morrison (1-under 71), sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (even-par 72) and graduate Matt Comegys (1-over 73) to post a team round of 1-under 287.
No. 14 Florida holds a 19-stroke lead in the team standings with a two-round total of 24-under 552 (276-276). The Longhorns are second at 5-under 571 (284-287), while Notre Dame is third at 1-over 577 (283-294).
The course played significantly harder in the second round, as the average score on Monday was 74.79 compared to the 73.58 in Sunday's opening round. Florida and Texas were the only two teams in the field to record under-par team rounds on Monday. The 15-team field features six squads in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Oct. 10).
Notre Dame's Nate Stevens (70-67) and Florida's Zack Swanwick (69-68) share the 36-hole individual lead at 7-under 137. Bennett is part of a three-way tie for third in the individual standings at 5-under 139 along with Florida teammates Parker Bell and Luke Poulter. Competing as an individual, senior Luke Potter is tied for seventh at 3-under 141 (71-70).
The Williams Cup concludes with a final round on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Texas will be paired with Florida and Notre Dame during Tuesday's third round, and the Longhorns are slated to tee off beginning at 8:55 a.m. CT (9:55 a.m. ET) from the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett carded a 1-under 71 on Monday and is in a three-way tie for third place in the individual standings at 5-under 139 (68-71), just two strokes off the lead. Bennett made three birdies (holes 4, 15 and 18) against two bogeys in his second round.
- Competing as an individual, senior Luke Potter fired a 2-under 70 in his second round and is tied for seventh at 3-under 141 (71-70). Starting on hole 10, Potter tallied three birdies (holes 10, 11 and 6) against just one bogey (hole 16) on Monday.
- Graduate Matt Comegys recorded a 1-over 73 on Monday and is tied for 12th at 1-under 143 (70-73). Comegys was 3-over through his first 13 holes in his second round before making birdies on holes 14 and 16 to close out his 1-over 73.
- Senior Tommy Morrison registered a 1-under 71 in his second round and is tied for 15th at even-par 144 (73-71). Morrison tallied three birdies (holes 1, 11 and 14) against two bogeys on Monday.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres recorded an even-par 72 on Monday and is tied for 20th at 1-over 145 (73-72). Derbez Torres carded three birdies (holes 7, 9 and 18) against three bogeys in his second round.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 3-over 75 in his second round and is tied for 46th at 6-over 150 (75-75). Maas recorded four birdies (holes 6, 10, 14 and 18) on Monday.
