No. 11 Men’s Golf concludes day one at Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 36-hole score of 6-over-par 566 (290-276) to rest in eighth place after the opening day at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Shady Oaks Country Club. Sophomores Christiaan Maas (73-67) and Jacob Sosa (71-69) each recorded two-round totals of even-par 140 and are tied for 19th in the individual standings.
The tournament's elite 15-team field features 14 squads in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll, including each of the top five ranked teams in the country.
No. 10 Oklahoma holds the 36-hole lead in the team standings after posting an 18-under-par 542 (277-265) on Monday. No. 2 Arizona State is in second at 13-under-par 547 (272-275), while No. 3 Vanderbilt is third at 10-under-par 550 (271-279).
After an opening-round score of 10-over-par 290 in the morning put the Longhorns in a tie for 14th place in the team standings, Texas rallied to fire a 4-under-par 276 in the afternoon and climb six spots on the team leaderboard. Three UT players recorded under-par rounds in Monday's second round, including Maas (67), Sosa (69) and sophomore Tommy Morrison (69).
Drew Goodman of Oklahoma tallied a 36-hole total of 9-under-par 131 (68-63) and holds a three-stroke lead in the individual standings. TCU's Gustav Frimodt (68-66), David Ford of North Carolina (66-68) and Oklahoma's Stephen Campbell Jr. (66-68) are tied for second at 6-under-par 134.
The Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday, October 3. Texas will be paired with Georgia and Oklahoma State for Tuesday's final round, and tee times will begin on hole 1 at 8 a.m. Central.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas fired a two-round score of even-par 140 (73-67) and is tied for 19th place in the individual standings. He registered five birdies against just two bogeys in his afternoon round, including closing with birdies on 17 and 18 to post a 3-under 67.
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa recorded a 36-hole total of even-par 140 (71-69) and is tied for 19th place. Sitting at 2-over thru his opening 12 holes during his afternoon round, Sosa closed out his day with birdies on 14, 16 and 18 to post a 1-under 69.
- Graduate Brian Stark registered a two-round score of 2-over-par 142 (71-71) and is tied for 34th. He recorded five birdies during his morning round.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison fired a 36-hole total of 4-over-par 144 (75-69) and is tied for 48th place. After opening his second round with a bogey on hole 2, he carded three birdies and just one bogey over his final 17 holes to post a 1-under 69.
- Freshman Jack Gilbert carded a two-round total of 9-over-par 149 (75-74) and is tied for 67th place. He registered four birdies during his morning round.
