No. 11 Men’s Golf advances to championship match at Cypress Point Classic

The Longhorns earn a 2-1 win in morning foursomes over Georgia Tech and a 2-1 victory in afternoon fourball against Pepperdine on Monday.
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team won a pair of matches on Monday during the opening day of the Cypress Point Classic at Cypress Point Club. The Longhorns earned a 2-1 victory over No. 5 Georgia Tech during foursomes play in the morning and followed with a 2-1 win against Pepperdine during fourball action in the afternoon.
With the two victories on Monday, Texas advances to the championship match of the Cypress Point Classic and will face No. 4 Arizona State on Tuesday. The Texas-Arizona State title contest will feature six singles matches beginning at 9 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Central).
During Monday morning's foursomes match against Georgia Tech, the sophomore tandem of Jacob Sosa and Tommy Morrison claimed a 4&3 victory over Brady Rackley IV and Colson Brown. The duo of graduate Nathan Petronzio and sophomore Keaton Vo clinched the team victory with a 4&3 win against Aidan Kramer and Aidan Tran.
In the afternoon fourball match against Pepperdine, Sosa and Morrison posted a 6&5 win over Kristoffer Kuvaas and Daniel Xu. The duo of Petronzio and Vo again clinched the team victory with a 3&1 win against William Walsh and Brady Siravo.
Texas will be looking to capture its second consecutive tournament title (both using match-play formats), as the Longhorns previously claimed the win at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Oct. 9-11.
(Morning Foursomes) Texas def. Georgia Tech, 2-1
- Jacob Sosa and Tommy Morrison earned a 4&3 win over Brady Rackley IV and Colson Brown. Starting on hole 10, Sosa and Morrison won the opening hole and never trailed in the match. Tied through 10 holes, Sosa and Morrison earned wins on holes 2, 3 and 4 to build a 3-up cushion and closed out the match with a win on hole 6.
- Nathan Petronzio and Keaton Vo clinched UT's win with a 4&3 victory against Aidan Kramer and Aidan Tran. Starting on hole 10, Petronzio and Vo won the opening three holes to grab a 3-up lead. After Kramer and Tran won hole 13 to trim the margin to 2-up, Petronzio and Vo won holes 15, 16 and 18 to build a 5-up cushion at the turn. Kramer and Tran won holes 1 and 3 to cut the deficit to 3-up, but Petronzio and Vo won hole 5 and halved hole 6 to finish the match.
- Graduate Brian Stark and Christiaan Maas dropped a 2&4 decision to Andy Mao and Adam Bratton. Mao and Bratton held a 2-up lead through 14 holes, and the match was conceded after Petronzio and Vo clinched the team win for the Longhorns in the previous match.
(Afternoon Fourball) Texas def. Pepperdine, 2-1
- Sosa and Morrison earned a 6&5 win over Kristoffer Kuvaas and Daniel Xu. Starting on hole 10, Sosa and Morrison won holes 10 and 11 to take a 2-up advantage. Kuvaas and Xu won hole 12 to trim the margin to 1-up, before Sosa and Morrison on holes 13, 16, 17 and 18 to build a 5-up cushion at the turn. Sosa and Morrison added a win on hole 3 and halved the next hole to close out the victory.
- Petronzio and Vo clinched UT's team win with a 3&1 victory against William Walsh and Brady Siravo. Starting on hole 10, Walsh and Siravo won hole 12 to take a 1-up lead before the Texas duo won hole 14 to even the match. The contest remained all square through 10 holes, before Petronzio and Vo claimed wins on holes 2, 6 and 8 to finish the match.
- Stark and Maas dropped a 4&3 decision to Mahanth Chirravuri and Joshua Koo.
