No. 15 Men’s Golf tied for third after first round at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS — The No. 15 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 5-under-par 283 on Sunday to stand in a tie for third place after the opening round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Freshman Christiaan Maas fired his collegiate-best 18-hole score of 6-under-par 66 and is tied for fourth in the individual standings.
No. 3 North Carolina holds the 18-hole lead in the team standings after a 17-under-par 271 on Sunday. No. 16 Pepperdine is second at 10-under-par 278, while Texas and No. 7 Florida are tied for third at 5-under-par 283. The 15-team field features nine teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Feb. 10).
Three players tallied rounds of 8-under-par 64 to share the individual lead, including Austin Greaser (North Carolina), Yuxin Lin (Florida) and Sam Choi (Pepperdine). Maas is tied for fourth place with Oklahoma's Jase Summy, just two strokes off the lead entering Monday's second round.
The Southern Highlands Collegiate continues with 18 holes on Monday, Feb. 27 and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Texas will be paired with North Carolina and Pepperdine for Monday's second round, and tee times will begin at 12:40 p.m. Central (10:40 a.m. Pacific) off the first tee.
The Lineup
- Freshman Christiaan Maas carded a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 6-under-par 66 and is tied for fourth in the individual standings. He posted one eagle (par-5 ninth hole) and six birdies against two bogeys on Sunday. Maas was 2-under through his first 11 holes before recording birdies on holes 12, 13, 14 and 18 to close out his opening-round 66.
- Freshman Tommy Morrison, competing as an individual, registered a 2-under-par 70 in his collegiate stroke-play tourney debut and is tied for 15th place. He tallied four birdies against two bogeys on Sunday.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa fired a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 21st place. He recorded four birdies against three bogeys on Sunday.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded an even-par 72 and is tied for 29th place. He registered a pair of birdies against two bogeys on Sunday.
- Freshman Keaton Vo posted a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 50th, while senior Travis Vick fired a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 61st place.
