The Longhorns opened Big 12 play with a 6-2 win over the Red Raiders on Friday night.
AUSTIN, Texas – Porter Brown hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead Texas Baseball to a 6-2 to open Big 12 Conference play on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (16-7, 1-0) trailed 2-1 after the top of the sixth before scoring two runs in the bottom half and three more runs in the eighth inning to create some separation.
Zane Morehouse pitched 3.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen to improve to 3-0 on the season. He came into a jam in the sixth inning with a runner on and one out and got out of it. He finished with four strikeouts and no baserunners allowed.
Brown finished the game 3-for-3 with his two-run home run, his second game-winning homer of the season after going deep late in the series opener against Indiana.
Garret Guillemette was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk and was on base for Brown's two-run blast. Jack O'Dowd went 1-for-3 with a big two-run double in the eighth inning, while Mitchell Daly was 0-for-2 but had two big sacrifice flies.
Lucas Gordon started and pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits, while striking out eight batters. He got into a jam in the sixth when Morehouse was called out of the bullpen.
Texas was then able to break open the shutout in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Garret Guillemette singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Daly.
Texas Tech quickly tied the game up 1-1 with a pair of doubles in the top of the fifth inning.
The Red Raiders took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning and chased Gordon out of the game.
Texas jumped back in front in the bottom of the sixth off the bat of Brown, who launched a two-run go-ahead homer to make the score 3-2.
The Longhorns got some insurance in the eighth inning when Peyton Powell and Dylan Campbell both walked to start the inning. Guillemette sacrificed them into scoring position and Brown was intentionally walked to load the bases.
O'Dowd delivered a clutch two-run double and Daly capped off the scoring with his second sacrifice fly of the game.
Texas and Texas Tech will square off in Game 2 of the series on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
