No. 15 Men’s Golf in fourth after opening round at NCAA East Lansing Regional

Maas is tied for fifth in the individual standings after firing a 4-under 67 on Monday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The No. 15 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 9-under-par 275 on Monday to rest in fourth place in the team standings following the opening round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional at Eagle Eye Golf Club. Freshman Christiaan Maas paced the Longhorns with a 4-under-par 67 and is tied for fifth in the individual standings.
The NCAA East Lansing Regional features 13 teams and 10 individual players. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Georgia holds the team lead after the first 18 holes at 18-under-par 266, followed by host Michigan State and No. 3 Illinois tied for second at 12-under-par 272. Texas (275) has a four-stroke cushion over Little Rock and Oregon, who are tied for fifth at 5-under-par 279.
The Longhorns were paced by a trio of freshmen in Monday's opening round who posted a combined score of 10-under. In addition to Maas' 67, both Tommy Morrison and Keaton Vo recorded scores of 3-under-par 68. Vo's round was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the fifth hole, as his 6-iron found the bottom of the cup from 202 yards. Morrison's 68 marked a collegiate-low 18-hole score, topping his 69 set during the final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 28).
Georgia's Ben Van Wyk owns the 18-hole individual lead at 6-under-par 65. Owen Avrit of Oregon, Georgia's Caleb Manuel and Troy Taylor II of Michigan State are tied for second at 5-under-par 66.
The NCAA East Lansing Regional continues with 18 holes on Tuesday, May 16 and concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday, May 17. Texas will be paired with Little Rock and Oregon for Tuesday's second round, and tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. Central off the 10th tee.
The Lineup
- Freshman Christiaan Maas registered a 4-under-par 67 and is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard after the first 18 holes. Maas was 1-under through his first 12 holes and made birdies on 14, 15 and 18 to finish at 4-under on Monday. The 67 was one stroke shy of his collegiate-low 18-hole score of 66, set in the opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 26).
- Freshman Keaton Vo carded a 3-under-par 68 and is tied for 11th in the individual standings. Vo's opening round was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the fifth hole, where he drained a 6-iron from 202 yards. He posted a pair of birdies in addition to his eagle (hole-in-one on hole 5) against just one bogey on Monday.
- Freshman Tommy Morrison fired a 3-under-par 68 and is tied for 11th place. This marked a collegiate-low 18-hole score for Morrison, topping the 69 he posted during the third round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 28) where he competed as an individual. He registered birdies on holes 1, 4 and 7 on the front nine to make the turn at 3-under. Morrison added a pair of birdies against two bogeys on the back nine to conclude his round on Monday.
- Senior Mason Nome recorded a 1 over-par 71 and is tied for 44th place. Nome made birdies on holes 4, 6 and 7 before a bogey on hole 9 put him at 2-under at the turn.
- Graduate Brian Stark tallied a 4-over-par 75 on Monday and is tied for 67th place.
