Baseball takes series at Kansas
05.07.2023 | Baseball
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Dylan Campbell made history as Texas Baseball held on for a narrow 7-6 win over Kansas to clinch the series on Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Longhorns (32-17, 12-9) scored four runs in the seventh and closed out the series win.
Campbell went 2-for-3 and wrote himself into Texas Baseball history by extending his hitting streak to a program record 26 games. He broke the previous record of a 25-game hitting streak by Michael Torres in 2008.
Travis Sthele pitched well in relief and picked up the win, tossing 5.1 innings and tying his career high with nine strikeouts. He allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk in his five-plus innings pitched.
Tanner Witt made his second start back and pitched the first inning, giving up one run but working out of a jam to complete the inning.
Ace Whitehead picked up his first career save, retiring the final batter of the game with a strikeout.
The Longhorns got a run on the board in the top of the first with a single by Jared Thomas, a double by Campbell and an RBI groundout by Garret Guillemette.
Kansas got the run back in the bottom of the first but Witt was able to strand the bases loaded and keep the game tied 1-1.
The Jayhawks grabbed a 2-1 lead on three hits in the bottom of the second but Texas got the run back in the top of the third after loading the bases with one out. Guillemette drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2.
The teams continued trading runs as Kansas retook the lead, 3-2, with two more hits in the bottom of the third inning. Texas tied the game back up in the top of the fourth after Rylan Galvan singled and came around to score on an RBI single by Jack O'Dowd.
Texas broke up the tie in the seventh with four runs on four hits to take a 7-3 lead. Thomas and Powell both singled to start the inning and Campbell sacrificed them into scoring position. Guillemette followed with a single to left for this third RBI of the day and Porter Brown drove in Powell with a squeeze bunt for the second run of the inning. Eric Kennedy followed up with a two-run home run launched out to right field.
Kansas got one run back in the bottom of the seventh but David Shaw came out of the bullpen to get Texas out of the inning. The Jayhawks tacked on two more unearned runs in the ninth to make it close.
