No. 11 Men’s Golf tied for third after day one at Sahalee Players Championship

Petronzio fires a 36-hole score of 1-under-par in his Texas debut and is sixth in the individual standings.
SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 36-hole score of 3-over-par 579 (290-289) to rest in a tie for third place after the opening day at the season-opening Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club. Senior transfer Nathan Petronzio shined in his Longhorn debut with a two-round score of 1-under-par 143 (70-73) and is sixth in the individual standings.
No. 9 Illinois holds the 36-hole lead in the team standings after posting a 9-under-par 567 (286-281) on Saturday. No. 17 Texas Tech is second at 1-over-par 577 (290-287). The Longhorns are in a three-way tie for second at 3-over-par 579 with No. 16 Oklahoma State (288-291) and No. 19 Arizona (289-290). The 12-team field features 10 teams in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll.
Max Herendeen of Illinois tallied a 36-hole total of 6-under-par 138 (74-64) and holds a one-stroke lead in the individual standings. Arizona State's Preston Summerhays is second at 5-under-par 139 (72-67).
Petronzio is one of three Longhorns who are in the top 11 in the individual standings after the opening two rounds. Sophomore Jacob Sosa is tied for seventh at even-par 144 (75-69), and graduate Brian Stark is tied for 11th at 1-over-par 145 (71-74).
The Sahalee Players Championship concludes with 18 holes on Sunday, Sept. 10. Texas will be paired with Arizona and Arizona State for Sunday's final round, and tee times will begin on hole 1 at 9:45 a.m. Central (7:45 a.m. Pacific).
The Lineup
- Senior transfer Nathan Petronzio is sixth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 1-under-par 143 (70-73) in his Longhorn debut. Starting on hole 10 and sitting at even-par through his opening eight holes during his morning round, he carded four consecutive birdies on holes 18, 1, 2 and 3 en route to a 2-under 70.
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa carded a two-round score of even-par 144 (75-69) and is tied for seventh. In his afternoon round, Sosa made the turn with a birdie on hole 18 before firing a 4-under 32 on the front nine to post a 3-under 69.
- Graduate Brian Stark registered a 36-hole total of 1-over-par 145 (71-74) and is tied for 11th. He recorded four birdies during his morning round of 1-under 71.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas fired a two-round score of 3-over-par 147 (74-73) and is tied for 25th. He registered six birdies during his afternoon round of 1-over 73.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison recorded a 36-hole total of 11-over-par 155 (76-79) and is tied for 62nd.
- Competing as an individual, freshman Jack Gilbert is tied for 59th in the individual standings after posting a two-round score of 10-over-par 154 (76-78) in his Longhorn debut.
