No. 11 Men’s Golf ties for sixth at Sahalee Players Championship

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round score of 16-over-par 304 on Sunday to finish in a tie for sixth place at the season-opening Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club. Sophomore Jacob Sosa led the Longhorns with a three-round score of 2-over-par 218 (75-69-74) to tie for seventh in the individual standings.
No. 9 Illinois claimed the team title with a 54-hole total of 1-under-par 863 (286-281-296), while No. 2 Arizona State placed second at 7-over-par 871 (286-296-289). Host Washington took third at 10-over-par 874 (294-293-287). The Longhorns tied with No. 17 Texas Tech (290-287-306) for sixth in the team standings. The 12-team field featured 10 teams in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll.
Preston Summerhays of Arizona State earned individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 5-under-par 211 (72-67-72). Summerhays defeated Max Herendeen of Illinois in a playoff to capture the individual crown.
Sosa registered the second-best individual finish of his collegiate career with his tie for seventh place. Last year, he finished third at the Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 30-Feb. 1) at 7-under-par 209 (61-74-74).
Texas returns to the course when it competes in the Fighting Illini Collegiate on Sept. 15-17 (Friday-Sunday) in Chicago.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa carded a final-round score of 2-over-par 74 to tie for seventh in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 2-over-par 218 (75-69-74). The tie for seventh marked Sosa's second-best individual finish of his collegiate career, as he placed third at last year's Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 30-Feb. 1). Sosa made a pair of birdies and 12 pars during his round on Sunday.
- Graduate Brian Stark posted a final-round score of 3-over-par 75 to tie for 14th with a 54-hole total of 4-over-par 220 (71-74-75).
- Senior transfer Nathan Petronzio fired a final-round 7-over-par 79 to tie for 27th with a 54-hole total of 6-over-par 222 (70-73-79) in his Longhorn debut.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas carded a final-round 4-over-par 76 to tie for 30th with a 54-hole total of 7-over-par 223 (74-73-76).
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison recorded a final-round 7-over-par 79 to finish in 61st place with a 54-hole total of 18-over-par 234 (76-79-79).
- Competing as an individual, freshman Jack Gilbert posted a final-round 10-over-par 82 to finish in 64th place with a 54-hole total of 20-over-par 236 (76-78-82) in his Longhorn debut.
