No. 11 Men’s Golf posts 1-0-1 mark on opening day of NB3 Matchplay

The Longhorns earned a 3-2 win over New Mexico State and a 2.5-2.5 tie against New Mexico on Tuesday.
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team registered a win and a tie in its two matches on Tuesday during the opening day of the inaugural NB3 MatchPlay at Twin Warriors Golf Club. The Longhorns posted a 3-2 victory over New Mexico State in the morning round and followed with a 2.5-2.5 tie against New Mexico in the afternoon session.
Junior Christiaan Maas paced the Longhorns with a pair of victories in his individual matches, while sophomore Jack Gilbert earned one victory and claimed a tie in his second match. Junior Tommy Morrison and freshman Daniel Bennett each carded one individual match-play win on Tuesday.
This unique event features a round-robin schedule of match play, where the Longhorns compete against New Mexico State, New Mexico and No. 22 Stanford. In addition, the Texas women also are competing in an identical format against the same three opponents.
In the morning match on Tuesday against New Mexico State, pairings were in twosomes. For the Tuesday afternoon match against New Mexico and Wednesday's match against Stanford, players will be paired in foursomes, using one male and one female from the same university playing against one male and one female of the other university.
Texas will conclude play in the NB3 Matchplay on Wednesday, Oct. 9 with a match against Stanford at 12:05 p.m. CT. Golf Channel will provide live coverage of Wednesday's play from 3:30-6:30 p.m. CT. Following Wednesday's action, awards will be presented to the men's team champion, women's team champion and combined university champion. Teams receive 1.0 point for winning a match, 0.5 point for ties and 0 points for losing a match.
Following Tuesday's action, New Mexico State holds the lead in the men's standings with 6.5 points, while Texas and New Mexico both have 5.5 points and Stanford is fourth at 2.5 points. In the combined (men's and women's) standings, the Longhorns hold the lead with 15.0 points and are followed by Stanford (10.0), New Mexico State (8.0) and New Mexico (7.0).
Texas 3, New Mexico State 2 (Tuesday morning)
- Junior Christiaan Maas recorded a 2-up victory over Aidan Thomas. Starting on hole 10, Thomas won holes 11 and 13 to build a 2-up advantage before Maas answered by winning holes 15 and 18 to tie the match. Maas then won holes 3 and 4 to take a 2-up cushion. Thomas trimmed the lead to 1-up with a win on hole 8, but Maas closed out his 2-up victory with a birdie and a win on hole 9.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett registered a 4&3 win against Mateo Payan. Starting on hole 11, Payan won the opening hole but Bennett responded by winning holes 14, 15 and 16 to take a 2-up lead. Still holding a 2-up lead through nine holes, Bennett added wins on holes 2 and 3 to increase the advantage to 4-up. Payan won hole 4 to pull to within 3-up, but Bennett closed out the match by winning hole 7.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert clinched the overall team win with a 2&1 victory over Vari Mariscal. Starting on hole 12, Mariscal won holes 13 and 14 to build a 2-up cushion. Gilbert responded with wins on holes 2 and 4 to tie the match. Mariscal won hole 5 to grab a 1-up lead, but Gilbert answered by winning holes 6 and 7 to take a 1-up advantage. Mariscal tied the match with a win on hole 8, before Gilbert claimed holes 9 and 10 to close out the 2&1 win.
- Junior Tommy Morrison dropped a 3&2 decision to Javier Delgadillo.
- Junior Luke Potter fell by a 4&3 margin to Ethan Klose.
Texas 2.5, New Mexico 2.5 (Tuesday afternoon)
- Junior Tommy Morrison registered a 4&3 victory over Alvaro Portillo. Tied through the opening eight holes, Morrison won holes 9, 10, 11 and 13 to build a 4-up cushion. The two players halved the next two holes, and Morrison finished out the 4&3 win.
- Junior Christiaan Maas claimed a 2-up win against Mesa Falleur. After Falleur won the second hole, Maas earned wins on holes 3, 4, 6 and 9 to take a 3-up advantage at the turn. Maas extended the cushion to 4-up on hole 12, before Falleur rallied to win holes 14, 15 and 16 to pull to within 1-up. After the two players halved 17, Maas won the finishing 18th hole to close out his 2-up victory.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert earned a tie against Clark Sonnenberg. Gilbert held a 1-up lead through 14 holes before Sonnenberg won 15 to tie the match. After Gilbert won hole 16 with a birdie, Sonnenberg answered with a birdie to win 17. The two players both made par on 18 to halve the match.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett dropped a 3&2 decision to Carson Herron.
- Junior Luke Potter fell by a 3&2 margin to Wyatt Provence.
