No. 12 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at Folds of Honor Collegiate

Derbez Torres is tied for fourth in the individual standings at 3-under after 18 holes.
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The No. 12 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 1-over 285 on Monday to rest in a tie for sixth place after the opening round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Club. Junior Eduardo Derbez Torres fired a 3-under 68 and is tied for fourth in the individual standings.
In Monday's opening round, Texas counted scores from Derbez Torres (3-under 68), junior Daniel Bennett (1-under 70), fifth-year Matt Comegys (2-over 73) and sophomore Brooks Simmons (3-over 74).
Georgia Tech holds a seven-stroke lead in the team standings at 12-under 272, while host Michigan State is second at 5-under 279. Notre Dame is third at 4-under 280. The Longhorns are 13 strokes off the lead but just six shots out of second after the opening round.
Max Emberson of Georgia Tech holds the individual lead after the opening 18 holes at 8-under 63. Emberson is two strokes in front of Vaughn Harber of Ohio State in second at 6-under 65, while Florida State's Shawn Coultoff is third at 4-under 67. Derbez Torres is in a four-way tie for fourth at 3-under 68.
The Folds of Honor Collegiate continues with 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Texas will again be paired with Alabama and Notre Dame in Tuesday's second round, and tee times will begin at 6:30 a.m. Central (7:30 a.m. Eastern) from the 10th tee. Golf Channel will provide live coverage of Tuesday's second round from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Central.
The Lineup
- Junior Eduardo Derbez Torres fired a 3-under 68 and is in a four-way tie for fourth place in the individual standings. Derbez Torres posted three consecutive birdies on holes 5, 6 and 7 and made the turn at 3-under. He birdied hole 10 to climb to 4-under before a bogey on hole 15 and three straight pars closed out his 3-under 68.
- Junior Daniel Bennett carded a 1-under 70 and is tied for 11th. Bennett tallied seven birdies (holes 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13 and 18) in his opening round.
- Fifth-year Matt Comegys registered a 2-over 73 and is tied for 35th. Comegys was 3-over at the turn but recorded a birdie on hole 12 to finish at 2-over in his opening round.
- Making his collegiate debut, sophomore Brooks Simmons registered a 3-over 74 and is tied for 47th. Simmons carded a pair of birdies on holes 1 and 6 in his opening round.
- Senior Jack Gilbert fired a 5-over 76 and is tied for 61st. Gilbert posted one birdie (hole 8) during his opening round on Monday.
