No. 22 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The No. 22 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 4-under-par 284 on Sunday and rests in a tie for seventh place after the opening round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Sophomore Jacob Sosa posted a 3-under 69 and is tied for seventh in the individual standings following the opening 18 holes.
The Longhorns counted under-par rounds from Sosa and senior Nathan Petronzio (1-under 71) and even-par scores of 72 from graduate Brian Stark and sophomore Tommy Morrison on Sunday. Texas is only six strokes off the lead entering Monday's second round.
No. 16 Florida holds the 18-hole lead in the team standings at 10-under-par 278. No. 20 Illinois is second at 8-under-par 280, while Pepperdine, San Diego State and Texas A&M are tied for third at 6-under-par 282. The 15-team field features eight squads in the latest Top 25 of the national rankings provided by Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
Missouri's Jack Lundin fired a 6-under-par 66 and holds the 18-hole individual lead. Ian Gilligan of Florida, Illinois' Tyler Goecke and Josele Ballester of Arizona State are tied for second at 5-under-par 67.
The Southern Highlands Collegiate continues with 18 holes on Monday, Feb. 26 and concludes with a final round on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Texas will be paired with Oklahoma and New Mexico for Monday's second round and will tee off at hole No. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. PT (11 a.m. CT).
The Lineup
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa carded a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday and is tied for seventh in the individual standings. After a double-bogey on hole 5, he responded with four consecutive birdies to make the turn at 2-under. Sosa then made birdie at 13 and bogey at 17 before closing his round with a birdie on 18.
- Senior Nathan Petronzio fired a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round and is tied for 26th place. He recorded three birdies against two bogeys on Sunday.
- Graduate Brian Stark registered an even-par 72 on Sunday and is tied for 39th. He made 10 consecutive pars to begin his round. After back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12 dropped him to 2-over, Stark responded with back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14. He dropped a shot on 15 before making birdie on 16 and closed his round with pars on 17 and 18.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison posted an even-par 72 and is tied for 39th. He was at 2-under after a birdie on 13, but he made bogey on 14 and 18 to finish at even-par on Sunday.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo carded a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday and is tied for 60th place.
- Competing as an individual, freshman Jack Gilbert tallied a 4-over-par 76 in his opening round and is tied for 66th place.
