The Longhorns swept the Cal Poly Mustangs while not allowing a run in the three-game series.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 16 Texas Baseball completed the weekend series shutout of Cal Poly with a 7-0 win on Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The three-straight shutouts are the first by Texas since 2015 against Minnesota and the series sweep is the first since 2002 against UT Pan American.
The Longhorns (6-1) did not allow a run in the three-game series with great starting pitching by Lebarron Johnson Jr., Charlie Hurley and Cody Howard and outstanding work from the bullpen.
Cody Howard pitched five scoreless innings in his first career start on Sunday to pick up the win. He struck out three batters and scattered seven hits in the outing.
Peyton Powell, Max Belyeu and Jalin Flores provided almost all of the offense in the game, as Powell blasted a pair of home runs while Belyeu and Flores each launched a solo shot.
Powell finished 4-for-5 with a solo homer in the third and a two-run shot in the seventh to up his home run total this season to four and his RBI total to 15. Belyeu, who had a two-hit day, hit his solo homer in the sixth and Flores hit his in the seventh.
Jared Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Casey Borba was 2-for-3 in his first career start.
The Longhorns outfield defense was also outstanding all game, throwing out two runners on the bases. In the top of the first, a runner tried to go from first to third and Belyeu threw a rocket to third base for the out. In the sixth inning, a Cal Poly baserunner attempted to score on a double to left but the Longhorns executed a textbook relay by Porter Brown and Flores.
Max Grubbs and Gage Boehm each tossed scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Easton Tumis pitched the final two scoreless frames.
The Longhorns tacked on a few more runs in the eighth inning when Thomas singled and later scored on a passed ball and Rylan Galvan hit an RBI single.
Texas will close out its season opening home stand against St. John's on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before heading on the road for the first time this season to play in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park starting on Friday.
