Lebarron Johnson Jr. was named the Pitcher of the Week and Peyton Powell the Player of the Week.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 15 Texas Baseball's Lebarron Johnson Jr. has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, while Peyton Powell was named the Big 12's Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Johnson Jr. threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits on Friday night against Cal Poly. The right-hander from Jacksonville, Florida struck out eight Mustangs, and never allowed more than one batter to reach in any inning. His start set the tone for the Longhorn hurlers in the series, as they shut out Cal Poly over the entire three-game set, a feat only accomplished one other time by Texas since 1971. He retired the last eight batters he faced, to pick up the win and his second career pitcher of the week honor.
Powell hit .471 with three home runs and eight RBI, helping Texas outscore its opponents 35-3 in four wins and claim his first career Big 12 weekly honor. While he has hit safely in all seven games this season, his week was highlighted with a 4-for-5 game in the series finale against Cal Poly—his first career multi-homer game.
The senior third baseman had two extra-base hits in the midweek game against Houston Christian, driving in three runs. For the week, the Robinson, Texas native finished with a 1.618 OPS.
The Longhorns will close out their season opening homestand against St. John's on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before heading on the road for the first time this season to play in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park starting on Friday.
