No. 22 Men’s Golf takes third at Southern Highlands Collegiate

Morrison cards a collegiate-best 5-under 67 on Tuesday to finish in a collegiate-best tie for sixth in the individual standings.
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The No. 22 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 1-under-par 287 on Tuesday to finish in third place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Sophomore Tommy Morrison posted a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 5-under 67 in the final round to finish in a collegiate-best tie for sixth in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 4-under-par 212 (72-73-67).
The Longhorns counted scores from Morrison, sophomore Jacob Sosa (even-par 72), senior Nathan Petronzio (2-over 74) and graduate Brian Stark (2-over 74) in Tuesday's final round. In addition to Morrison's career-best performance, Petronzio also registered a season-best tournament finish with his tie for ninth at 2-under-par 214 (71-69-74).
Texas recorded a 54-hole score of 2-over-par 866 (284-295-287). No. 15 Oklahoma won the team title with a three-round total of 8-under-par 856 (284-291-281), while No. 2 Auburn placed second at 5-under-par 859 (287-295-277). The 15-team field featured eight squads in the latest Top 25 of the national rankings provided by Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
Ian Gilligan of Florida captured individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 8-under-par 208 (67-71-70). Oklahoma's Jase Summy finished second at 7-under-par 209 (71-72-66), while Brendan Valdes of Auburn took third at 6-under-par 210 (72-71-67).
The Longhorns return to the course at the Johnnie-O Intercollegiate on March 11-12 (Monday-Tuesday) at St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison carded a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 5-under 67 in his final round to finish in a collegiate-best tie for sixth place in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 4-under-par 212 (72-73-67). His previous low 18-hole score was 68 (three times), and his previous best finish was a tie for eighth at last year's NCAA Bath (Mich.) Regional. Morrison was 3-under through his first seven holes (birdies on 3, 6 and 7) before making a double-bogey on 8. He then made birdie on 9 to make the turn at 2-under. Morrison had five straight pars to remain at 2-under through 14 holes, before closing with birdies on 15, 16 and 18 to finish at 5-under.
- Senior Nathan Petronzio posted a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for ninth at 2-under-par 214 (71-69-74). He registered three birdies in his final round.
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa fired an even-par 72 in his final round and placed in a tie for 29th at 3-over-par 219 (69-78-72). Sosa's play on Tuesday was highlighted by a pair of eagles, the first on the par-five No. 3 and the second on the par-five No. 13. He also recorded three birdies during his final round.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 56th at 8-over-par 224 (72-78-74). He recorded four birdies in his final round.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo tallied a 9-over 81 in his final round and placed in a tie for 71st at 15-over-par 231 (75-75-81).
- Competing as an individual, freshman Jack Gilbert posted a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and finished in 79th place at 19-over-par 235 (76-85-74). His final round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five No. 13.
