No. 19 Men’s Golf finishes as runner-up at Johnnie-O Intercollegiate

Maas records a tie for fourth place in the individual standings with a three-round score of 8-under 208.
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 19 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round score of 9-under-par 279 on Tuesday to finish in second place at the Johnnie-O Intercollegiate at Sea Island Plantation Course. Sophomore Christiaan Maas paced the Longhorns with a 54-hole total of 8-under-par 208 (69-68-71) to tie for fourth in the individual standings.
The Longhorns registered a three-round score of 22-under-par 842 (287-276-279). Notre Dame captured the team championship at 32-under-par 832 (287-270-275), while Michigan State took third at 21-under-par 843 (287-276-280).
During Tuesday's final round, Texas counted scores of 3-under 69 from both sophomore Jacob Sosa and senior Nathan Petronzio, a 2-under 70 by sophomore Tommy Morrison and a 1-under 71 from Maas.
Ashton McCulloch of Michigan State (68-62-74) and Notre Dame's Jacob Modleski (72-67-65) shared individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 12-under-par 204. Palmer Jackson of Notre Dame placed third in the individual standings at 10-under-par 206 (69-65-72).
Texas will return to the course on Thursday, March 14 when it faces No. 16 Illinois in an exhibition match in Okalie, South Carolina.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas carded a 1-under 71 in his final round and tied for fourth in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 8-under-par 208 (69-68-71). In Tuesday's final round, Maas climbed to 3-under through his first 10 holes but he made bogey on four of the next five holes to fall back to 1-over on the day. He rallied to record back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to finish at 1-under. This marks his second top-five performance of the season, as he placed third at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 15-17).
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison tallied a 2-under 70 on Tuesday and tied for 12th place at 5-under-par 211 (73-68-70). During his final round, Morrison was even-par through his first 12 holes but he rallied to make birdies on holes 13 and 17 to climb to 2-under on the day.
- Senior Nathan Petronzio recorded a 3-under 69 in his final round and tied for 19th at 2-under-par 214 (71-74-69). In Tuesday's final round, Petronzio was 4-under at the turn before making bogey on three of his next four holes to slide back to 1-under. He responded by making birdies at holes 14 and 17 to finish at 3-under.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded a 1-over 73 on Tuesday and tied for 36th place at 2-over-par 218 (74-71-73). He tallied four birdies during his final round.
- Sophomore Jacob Sosa fired a 3-under 69 in his final round and tied for 43rd place at 3-over-par 219 (81-69-69). He climbed 29 spots on the individual leaderboard on Tuesday. During his final round, Sosa was at 1-under through his first 13 holes before making birdies on holes 14 and 15 to finish at 3-under.
