No. 20 Men’s Golf claims 5.5-1.5 victory over No. 21 Illinois in exhibition match

OKATIE, S.C. — The No. 20 Texas Men's Golf team concluded its Spring Break trip with a 5.5-1.5 victory over No. 21 Illinois in an exhibition match play contest on Thursday at Chechessee Creek Club. The exhibition match pitted the two programs who have tied for the most NCAA Match Play appearances (seven each) over the last 11 NCAA Championships, dating back to the 2012 Championship.
Both Texas and Illinois were in action on Monday and Tuesday earlier in the week at the Johnnie-O Intercollegiate at Sea Island Plantation Course in St. Simons Island, Ga. The Longhorns finished runner-up behind Notre Dame at the Johnnie-O Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 22-under-par 842 (287-276-279).
In Thursday's exhibition match against Illinois, graduate Brian Stark earned a 3&2 victory over Ryan Voois and sophomore Tommy Morrison added a 3&2 win against Max Herendeen. Senior Nathan Petronzio claimed a 2&1 victory over Tyler Goecke, and sophomore Jacob Sosa earned a 2&1 win against Ethan Wilson. Sophomore Keaton Vo added a 1-up victory over Timmy Crawford. Sophomore Christiaan Maas, No. 13 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) on March 13, registered a tie against No. 44 WAGR Jackson Buchanan.
Texas is back on the course at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on March 25-26 (Monday-Tuesday) in Palm City, Fla.
