HOUSTON, Texas – No. 15 Texas Baseball put together a ninth-inning rally but fell to No. 3 LSU, 6-3, on Friday night in the Astros Foundation College Class at Minute Maid Park.
The Longhorns (7-2) played in front of the seventh-largest regular season college baseball crowd ever with 24,927 in attendance. The announced crowd was also the second-highest single day attendance number in Astros Foundation College Classic history.
Peyton Powell had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead Texas offensively. Kimble Schuessler, who had to come off the bench in the fourth, hit his first home run of the season to account for the Longhorns only run of the game. Casey Borba went 1-for-4 with a two-run double.
Powell hit a double in the first inning, a single in the third and another double in the sixth but the Longhorns were unable to muster any other offense through the first six innings.
Lebarron Johnson Jr. took his first loss of the season, pitching three innings and being charged with two runs on four hits.
Tanner Witt pitched two innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit, while striking out one batter. The one hit he allowed did result in a pair of inherited runners scoring. Hudson Hamilton and Andre Duplantier II pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.
LSU jumped in front in the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits and chasing Johnson out of the game. Witt came out of the bullpen and gave up a hit but was able to limit the damage.
The Tigers added to their lead in the seventh inning with a pair of home runs to take a 6-0 lead.
Schuessler got the Longhorns on the board in the seventh with a solo home run to left field.
The Longhorns put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth with Jalin Flores starting the inning with a double and Porter Brown hitting a single. Borba drove them both in with a two-run double to deep center field.
