No. 17 Men’s Golf finishes sixth at Western Intercollegiate

Morrison cards a 4-under 66 on Wednesday to post a collegiate career-best tie for fourth in the individual standings.
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The No. 17 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 1-over-par 351 on Wednesday to finish in sixth place in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. Sophomore Tommy Morrison carded a 4-under-par 66 in Wednesday's final round to post a collegiate career-best tie for fourth place in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 2-under-par 208 (75-67-66).
The Longhorns concluded the tournament with a three-round total of 17-over-par 1067 (363-353-351), just four strokes out of second place. The top seven teams in the tournament's final standings all completed play within a margin of 10 strokes.
Sophomore Christiaan Maas equaled Morrison's effort with a 4-under-par 66 during Wednesday's final round. In addition to the duo of Morrison and Maas, senior Nathan Petronzio earned a tie for ninth place in the individual standings with a three-round score of even-par 210 (67-71-72).
The Western Intercollegiate used a play-six, count-five scoring system. Stanford claimed the team title with a 54-hole total of 8-over-par 1058 (354-355-349). No. 8 Washington placed second at 13-over-par 1063 (355-357-351), and No. 21 California took third at 14-over-par 1064 (356-364-344). No. 25 Oregon finished fourth at 15-over-par 1065, and No. 9 Arizona placed fifth at 16-over-par 1066. The 14-team field featured five squads in the Top 25 of the national rankings provided by Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
Arizona's Filip Jakubcik won individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 4-under-par 206 (68-68-70). Justin Hastings of San Diego State (71-70-66) and Stanford's Michael Thorbjornsen (69-71-67) tied for second at 3-under-par 207. Morrison finished in a four-way tie for fourth place at 2-under-par 208.
The Longhorns now turn the page to postseason play and return to the course on April 22-24 (Monday-Wednesday) when they travel to Trinity, Texas to compete at the Big 12 Championship.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison carded a 4-under-par 66 on Wednesday to climb 16 spots on the individual leaderboard and finish in a tie for fourth place with a three-round total of 2-under-par 208 (75-67-66), just two strokes behind individual medalist Filip Jakubcik of Arizona at 4-under-par 206. This marked Morrison's collegiate career-best finish, topping his tie for sixth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 25-27) earlier this spring. He has now recorded three top-10 individual performances this season. After starting Wednesday's round with a bogey on the opening hole, Morrison tallied five birdies (holes 2, 8, 15, 16 and 18) and 12 pars to post his 4-under 66.
- Senior Nathan Petronzio posted a 2-over-par 72 in the third round and tied for ninth in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of even-par 210 (67-71-72). His tie for ninth equaled the best finish of the season, as he also tied for ninth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 25-27) earlier this spring. Petronzio has now recorded five top-25 individual performances this year. He was 4-over through his first 13 holes on Wednesday but rallied to make birdies on holes 14 and 15 and closed with three-straight pars to finish at 2-over 72.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas fired a 4-under-par 66 on Wednesday to jump 27 spots in the individual standings and place in a tie for 46th with a three-round total of 8-over-par 218 (73-79-66). Maas registered six birdies (holes 4, 6, 12, 13, 14 and 16) against just two bogeys in the final round.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo recorded a 3-over-par 73 in the third round and tied for 34th with a 54-hole score of 5-over-par 215 (72-70-73). Vo tallied three birdies (holes 4, 8 and 11) during Wednesday's play.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded a 5-over-par 75 on Wednesday and finished in a tie for 65th with a three-round total of 13-over-par 223 (76-72-75).
- Freshman Jack Gilbert posted a 4-over-par 74 in the third round and placed in a tie for 79th with a 54-hole score of 18-over-par 228 (81-73-74). He registered a pair of birdies on Wednesday.
