AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Baseball bashed five home runs, including two grand slams, en route to a 16-9 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (28-18, 13-8) held a narrow 2-1 lead before scoring four in the fourth, five in the fifth and four in the sixth to create some separation.
Jared Thomas had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a grand slam and five RBI. Will Gasparino went 1-for-2 with his second grand slam of the season and two runs scored.
Kimble Schuessler also had a big day offensively, with a career-best 4-for-5 with three doubles, a homer, one RBI and three runs scored.
Charlie Hurley started and pitched five innings with just one run allowed on one hit to pick up the win. David Shaw and Easton Tumis both pitched scoreless innings out of the bullpen as well.
Schuessler launched a solo homer in the second inning to give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. Sam Houston tied the game up with a run in the third after a leadoff walk came around to score.
Texas jumped back in front in the third inning with a pair of two-out hits. Peyton Powell doubled and Max Belyeu drove him in with an RBI single to center field.
The Longhorns put together a big fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits to extend the lead to 6-1. Schuessler started things with a double before Rylan Galvan walked and Gasparino sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Dee Kennedy drove in the first run with an RBI groundout before Jared Thomas hit an RBI triple to drive in Galvan.
Jalin Flores followed up with his 16th homer of the season, a two-run shot to make the score 6-1.
Texas put the game away in the fifth with five two-out runs to go up 11-1. Belyeu doubled and was sacrificed to third by Casey Borba. With two outs, Galvan beat out an infield single to drive in Belyeu. After back-to-back walks to Kennedy and Gasparino, Thomas blasted his first career grand slam out to left-center.
The Longhorns hit their second grand slam of the game in the sixth inning, as Gasparino went out to right field to extend the lead to 15-1.
The Bearkats took advantage of five walks and just three hits in the seventh inning to plate seven runs and cut to the lead to 15-8.
Powell got one of the runs right back in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run off the scoreboard in right-center field. Sam Houston scored one final run in the top of the eighth, with the run scoring on an error.
Texas will be back at UFCU Disch-Falk Field this weekend to host No. 14 Oklahoma State for a three-game series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
