No. 13 Men’s Golf in the lead after opening round at NCAA Austin Regional

Petronzio and Morrison each fire a 4-under 67 on Monday and are tied for the lead in the individual standings.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 13 Texas Men's Golf team carded an 11-under-par 273 on Monday to grab the lead after the opening round of the NCAA Austin Regional at The University of Texas Golf Club. Senior Nathan Petronzio and sophomore Tommy Morrison each carded a 4-under 67 and are part of a six-way tie for the individual lead after the first 18 holes.
The NCAA Austin Regional features 13 teams and 10 individual players. The top five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 24-29 at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Texas has a two-stroke advantage over Notre Dame in second at 9-under 275, while top-seed and No. 5 Tennessee is third at 8-under 276. BYU is in fourth at 5-under 279, while Georgia is fifth at even-par 284. The Longhorns have a 12-stroke cushion over Utah in sixth place at 1-over 285.
A total of six players registered a 4-under 67 and share the individual lead after the first 18 holes, including Petronzio, Morrison, Palmer Jackson (Notre Dame), Michael Brennan (Wake Forest), Bryce Lewis (Tennessee) and Kelvin Hernandez (UNCG). In addition to Petronzio and Morrison's efforts, Texas counted scores from graduate Brian Stark (3-under 68) and sophomore Christiaan Maas (even-par 71) on Monday.
The NCAA Austin Regional continues with 18 holes on Tuesday, May 14 and concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday, May 15. Texas will be paired with Notre Dame and Tennessee for Tuesday's second round, and tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. Central off the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Senior Nathan Petronzio carded a 4-under 67 in the opening round and is tied for the individual lead. Petronzio was 1-over through his first four holes but rallied to record birdies on holes 5, 6 and 9 to make the turn at 2-under. He added three-straight birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15 to move to 5-under before closing with a bogey on 16 and back-to-back pars to finish at 4-under. Petronzio tied his season-low 18-hole score (67), matching the 67 he shot in the third round of the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 10) and the first round of the Western Intercollegiate (April 15).
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison posted a 4-under 67 on Monday and is tied for the individual lead. Morrison was 1-over through eight holes but recorded a birdie on hole 9 to make the turn at even-par. He ran off four straight birdies on holes 11, 12, 13 and 14 and closed his round with four straight pars to finish at 4-under.
- Graduate Brian Stark fired a 3-under 68 in the opening round and is tied for seventh in the individual standings. Stark was even-par through his first eight holes before making a birdie on hole 9 to make the turn at 1-under. He recorded three straight birdies on holes 12, 13 and 14 to climb to 4-under before making a bogey on 16 to finish at 3-under.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas registered an even-par 71 and is tied for 26th. Maas tallied three birdies (holes 1, 7 and 14) and 12 pars during his round on Monday.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo recorded a 2-over 73 and is tied for 43rd. Vo posted a pair of birdies (holes 6 and 14) and 13 pars in his opening round.
