No. 7 Men’s Golf tied for ninth after opening round at NCAA Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 7 Texas Men's Golf team carded an 8-over-par 296 on Friday to rest in a tie for ninth place after the opening round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. Senior Nathan Petronzio posted a 1-over 73 on Friday and is tied for 25th place in the individual standings after the first 18 holes.
In addition to Petronzio's performance, the Longhorns also counted scores in the opening round from sophomore Christiaan Maas (2-over 74), sophomore Tommy Morrison (2-over 74) and graduate Brian Stark (3-over 75).
Virginia and Arizona each tallied a 2-over-par 290 and share the team lead after the first 18 holes, one stroke in front of North Carolina at 3-over-par 291 in third and Georgia Tech at 4-over-par 292 in fourth. The Longhorns are six strokes off the lead entering Saturday's second round.
Georgia Tech's Hiroshi Tai holds the 18-hole individual lead after firing a 5-under 67 on Friday. Adam Wallin of Ohio State is second at 4-under 68, while Stanford's Karl Vilips and Florida's John DuBois are tied for third at 3-under 69. Only 12 players among the field of 156 individuals recorded under-par scores in the opening round.
The 2024 NCAA Championships continue with stroke play for all 30 teams on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. In Saturday's second round, the Longhorns will be paired again with Tennessee and Florida State, and tee times will begin at 9:02 a.m. CT (7:02 a.m. PT) from hole 10.
The field will be cut to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 27, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 28, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 29.
The Lineup
- Senior Nathan Petronzio carded a 1-over 73 to pace the Longhorns on Friday and is tied for 25th place in the individual standings after the opening round. Petronzio was 2-over after 10 holes before he holed out from the rough to record an eagle on the par-four 11th hole and move to even-par. He recorded a bogey on hole 13 and closed his round with five-straight pars to finish at 1-over.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas fired a 2-over-74 in the opening round and is tied for 41st place. He recorded birdies on holes 1, 2 and 4 sandwiched around a bogey on hole 3 to begin his round at 2-under through the first four holes. Maas was 3-over through 17 holes before he reached the par-five 18th green in two and two-putted for birdie to finish at 2-over.
- Sophomore Tommy Morrison recorded a 2-over 74 on Friday and is tied for 41st place. Morrison tallied three birdies in his round (holes 2, 10 and 12). He was even-par through 14 holes.
- Graduate Brian Stark carded a 3-over 75 in the opening round and is tied for 63rd place. Stark was 4-over through 17 holes before making his lone birdie of the day on the closing 18th hole to finish at 3-over.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo fired a 5-over 77 on Friday and is tied for 97th place. Vo made one birdie (hole 6) in his round and was even-par through 11 holes.
