No. 16 Baseball secures sweep of Dartmouth

Volantis silences Big Green in 4-1 victory on Sunday.
AUSTIN, Texas — The 16th-ranked University of Texas baseball team (5-1) completed the weekend sweep of Dartmouth (0-3) with a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Freshman left-hander Dylan Volantis (1-0) shut down the Big Green out of the bullpen, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless to earn his first career win.
Volantis retired 12 of the final 13 batters to secure the sweep, setting down each of the first eight hitters he faced.
The 6-foot-6, 212-pound hurler held Dartmouth to just one hit and recorded four strikeouts.
Sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza led the charge offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Mendoza delivered his first homer as a Longhorn — a go-ahead fifth-inning solo shot off of the right-field foul pole — before adding on an insurance tally with a run-scoring single in the eighth.
The Beford, Texas native also sparked the Horns at the plate, beating out a bunt single to lead off the third.
After Mendoza advanced 90 feet on a throwing error by Dartmouth third baseman Taer Rodriguez, Texas right fielder Max Belyeu followed with an RBI base hit to level the score, 1-1.
Big Green righty Nate Isler (0-1) was charged with the loss in his season debut. Isler surrendered two runs, one earned, on five hits across 4 2/3 frames.
Texas starter Kade Bing logged a no-decision, tossing the first 4 1/3 innings. Bing allowed one run on two hits, while striking out a pair.
In the victory, Belyeu reached safely four times, while freshman third baseman Adrian Rodriguez registered his third multi-hit effort in the last four contests.
The Longhorns will look to extend their five-game winning streak on Tuesday, as Texas welcomes Incarnate Word to UFCU Disch-Falk Field. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
