Longhorns suffer first loss since season opener on Feb. 14
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 8 Texas baseball team had its 17-game winning streak snapped by UTSA, falling to the Roadrunners, 8-7, Tuesday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas (17-2) picked up its first loss since Feb. 14, ending its longest winning streak since 2010.
UTSA catcher Andrew Stucky hit a go-ahead home run in the 12th inning and right-hander Braylon Owens (3-1) slammed the door on the Longhorns' longest game since March 29, 2019.
After the Roadrunners (17-6) scored five unanswered runs to take a 7-6 advantage, Texas catcher Rylan Galvan crushed a game-tying 428-foot shot in the eighth.
Galvan's team-leading seventh blast marked Texas' third solo shot of the night, following Max Belyeu's homer in the first and Adrian Rodriguez's dinger in the fifth.
In the defeat, left-hander Kade Bing threw five perfect innings, retiring 15 batters in a row. Bing came on with the bases loaded and no out in the opening frame, keeping one of the country's best offenses in check. The sophomore notched a season-best four strikeouts along the way.
The Longhorns backed Bing, scoring in four of the first five innings, bookended by Belyeu and Rodriguez's home runs.
Infielders Kimble Schuessler, Ethan Mendoza and Casey Borba all plated tallies to help Texas grab a 6-2 advantage after five frames.
Facing his former team, right-hander Ruger Riojas (5-1) picked up the loss. Riojas tossed 3 2/3 scoreless before Stucky delivered the eventual game-winning blow.
The Longhorns out-hit the Roadrunners, who entered the contest fifth nationally in batting average. Texas tallied 12 knocks, highlighted by a three-hit performance from shortstop Jalin Flores.
Up next, the Longhorns host their first-ever Southeastern Conference home series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas faces No. 2 LSU for a three-game set, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday.
