RICHMOND HILL, Ga. — The No. 2 Texas Men's Golf team posted a final-round score of 3-under par 277 on Tuesday to claim the team championship in The Ford Collegiate at the Ford Field and River Club. Freshman Daniel Bennett birdied holes 16 and 17 and made par on the closing 18th hole to record a 3-under 67 in his final round and tie for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 3-under 207 (72-68-67).
The Longhorns began Tuesday's final round in third place and five strokes behind 36-hole leader and No. 1 Auburn with No. 7 LSU in second just three strokes off the pace. With four holes remaining in today's round, Auburn had slipped out of contention in the team race and LSU held a four-stroke cushion over the Longhorns.
Bennett's strong finish on 16-17-18 along with LSU making a combined five bogeys over the final four holes resulted in Texas posting a two-stroke victory in the team race. The Longhorns registered a 54-hole score of 2-under 838 (281-280-277), while LSU finished runner-up at even-par 840 (276-283-281). Auburn placed third at 4-over 844 (276-280-288). The 12-team field featured three squads in the top 10 and five in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (April 9).
In Tuesday's final round, Texas counted scores from Bennett (3-under 67), junior Tommy Morrison (1-under 69), junior Luke Potter (even-par 70) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-over 71) to post a team round of 3-under 277.
The Longhorns have now claimed five team titles and recorded nine top-three team finishes in their first 10 stroke-play events of the 2024-25 season. Texas has been even more impressive this spring with five team wins, a runner-up finish and a third-place showing in its first seven tournaments. UT has claimed team titles this year at the Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 27-29), The Hayt (Mar. 8-10), the Valspar Collegiate Invitational (Mar. 24-25) and The Ford Collegiate (April 14-15) and shared the team championship at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational (April 5-6).
Georgia's duo of Buck Brumlow (69-69-67) and Grayson Wood (69-70-66) both recorded three-round totals of 5-under 205 to sit atop the individual leaderboard, before Brumlow earned medalist honors after a birdie on the first playoff hole. Bennett tied for third at 3-under 207 along with Frankie Harris of South Carolina (72-64-71) and LSU's Algot Kleen (71-66-70). Morrison tied for seventh at 1-under 209 (67-73-69).
This marked the final regular-season tournament for the Longhorns in the 2024-25 season. Texas will begin postseason play when it competes in the 2025 SEC Championship on April 23-27 (Wednesday-Sunday) at Saint Simons Island, Ga.
