No. 3 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at SEC Championship

Maas fires a 4-under 66 on Wednesday and is tied for fifth in the individual standings.
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 6-over-par 286 on Wednesday to rest in a tie for 14th place after the opening round of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. Junior Christiaan Maas fired a 4-under 66 and is tied for fifth in the individual standings after the opening 18 holes.
In addition to Maas' effort, Texas counted scores from junior Tommy Morrison (3-over 73), sophomore Jack Gilbert (3-over 73) and junior Luke Potter (4-over 74) in Wednesday's opening round.
No. 2 Auburn registered a 16-under 264 on Wednesday and holds a seven-stroke lead in the team standings. No. 7 LSU and No. 17 Texas A&M are tied for second at 9-under 271.
Texas A&M's Michael Heidelbaugh owns the individual lead after the first 18 holes, as he carded a 9-under 61 in the opening round. Joshiah Gilbert of Auburn is second at 6-under 64, while Auburn's Cayden Pope and Nathan Franks of South Carolina are tied for third at 5-under 65. Maas is five strokes off the lead at 4-under 66 and tied with a group of five players in fifth place.
The SEC Championship will continue with 18 holes of stroke play each on Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25. Following Friday's stroke-play round, the top eight teams will advance to the match-play portion of the Championship. Match-play quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested on Saturday, April 26, while the final is scheduled for Sunday, April 27.
Texas will be paired with Missouri and Vanderbilt for Thursday's second round, and tee times will begin at 8:40 a.m. Central (9:40 a.m. Eastern) off the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Junior Christiaan Maas carded a 4-under 66 on Wednesday and is tied for fifth in the individual standings. Maas made the turn at 2-under after birdies on holes 3 and 7 along with seven pars. He moved to 3-under with a birdie on 10, before a double bogey on 11 dropped him back to 1-under on his round. Maas responded with birdies on holes 12, 15 and 17 and three pars to close out his 4-under 66.
- Junior Tommy Morrison registered a 3-over 73 in his opening round and is tied for 60th. He tallied a pair of birdies (holes 5 and 8) on Wednesday.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert posted a 3-over 73 on Wednesday and is tied for 60th. He recorded a pair of birdies (holes 4 and 7) in his opening round.
- Junior Luke Potter tallied a 4-over 74 in his opening round and is tied for 70th. Potter made one birdie (hole 14) on Wednesday.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett fired a 5-over 75 on Wednesday and is tied for 78th.
