No. 3 Men’s Golf climbs to 11th place after day two at SEC Championship

Maas fires a 3-under 67 on Thursday and is tied for fourth in the individual standings.
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 5-under-par 275 on Thursday to climb three spots into 11th place after the second round of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. Junior Christiaan Maas carded a 3-under 67 in his second round and is tied for fourth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 7-under 133 (66-67).
Only the top eight teams following Friday's final round of stroke play will advance to the match-play portion of the SEC Championship. The Longhorns have registered a two-round total of 1-over 561 (286-275) and are six strokes below the cut line entering Friday. Mississippi State (279-276) and South Carolina (277-278) are tied for seventh place with 36-hole totals of 5-under 555.
In addition to Maas' effort, Texas counted scores from sophomore Jack Gilbert (2-under 68), junior Luke Potter (even-par 70) and freshman Daniel Bennett (even-par 70) on Thursday.
No. 7 LSU (271-263) and No. 2 Auburn (264-270) share the 36-hole lead in the team standings at 26-under 534. No. 6 Oklahoma is third at 18-under 542 (274-268), while No. 17 Texas A&M is fourth at 15-under 545 (271-274).
LSU's Jay Mendell owns the individual lead after the first 36 holes at 9-under 131 (66-65). Texas A&M's Michael Heidelbaugh (61-71) and Oklahoma's Drew Goodman (66-66) are tied for second at 8-under 132. Maas is tied for fourth along with Nathan Franks of South Carolina (65-68) at 7-under 133.
The SEC Championship will continue with 18 holes of stroke play on Friday, April 25, after which the field will be trimmed to eight teams for the match-play portion of the Championship. Match-play quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested on Saturday, April 26, while the final is scheduled for Sunday, April 27.
Texas will be paired with Arkansas and Ole Miss for Friday's third round, and tee times will begin at 7:50 a.m. Central (8:50 a.m. Eastern) off the 10th tee.
The Lineup
- Junior Christiaan Maas carded a 3-under 67 on Thursday and is tied for fourth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 7-under 133 (66-67). Maas recorded a clean card in his second round with three birdies (holes 3, 9 and 11) in addition to 15 pars.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert registered a 2-under 68 in his second round and jumped 24 spots into a tie for 36th with a two-round score of 1-over 141 (73-68). Gilbert posted a clean card on Thursday with two birdies (holes 1 and 7) in addition to 16 pars.
- Junior Luke Potter posted an even-par 70 on Thursday and is tied for 61st with a 36-hole total of 4-over 144 (74-70). Starting his second round on hole 10, he made back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 and made the turn at 2-under in his round. Potter made a bogey on 5 and a double-bogey on 8 before responding with a birdie on the closing 9th hole to finish at even-par 70.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett tallied an even-par 70 in his second round and is tied for 65th with a two-round score of 5-over 145 (75-70). Starting his round on hole 10 on Thursday, he recorded a pair of birdies (holes 14 and 8) against two bogeys en route to his even-par 70.
- Junior Tommy Morrison fired a 1-over 71 on Thursday and is tied for 61st with a 36-hole total of 4-over 144 (73-71). He registered a pair of birdies (holes 2 and 15) during his second round.
