No. 1 Men’s Golf in third after opening day at Augusta Haskins Award Invitational

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team carded a two-round total of 9-under par 567 (281-286) on Saturday to rest in third place just two strokes off the lead after the opening day of the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club. Freshman Daniel Bennett fired a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 (72-68) and is sixth in the individual standings entering Sunday's final round.
In Saturday's morning round, Texas counted scores from junior Christiaan Maas (4-under 68), junior Tommy Morrison (4-under 68), Bennett (even-par 72) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-over 73) to post a team round of 7-under 281. During Saturday afternoon's second round, the Longhorns counted scores from Bennett (4-under 68), Gilbert (2-under 70), Morrison (2-over 74) and junior Potter (2-over 74) to card a 2-under 286.
A closely-contested team race features five teams within four strokes of the lead after the opening 36 holes. No. 13 Illinois holds a one-stroke lead in the team standings at 11-under 565 (285-280), while No. 5 Oklahoma State is second at 10-under 566 (285-281). The Longhorns are two strokes off the lead in third at 9-under 567 (281-286), while No. 9 North Carolina is fourth at 8-under 568 (284-284) and Notre Dame is fifth at 7-under 569 (283-286). The 15-team field features five squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (April 2).
Oklahoma State's Preston Stout holds the individual lead after the first 36 holes with a 10-under 134 (66-68). North Carolina's David Ford (69-66) and Max Herendeen of Illinois (66-69) are tied for second at 9-under 135. Bennett is in sixth place in the individual standings at 4-under 140 (72-68), and Morrison is tied for ninth at 2-under 142 (68-74).
The Augusta Haskins Award Invitational is set to conclude with 18 holes on Sunday, April 6. Texas will be paired with Illinois and Oklahoma State in Sunday's final round, and tee times will begin at 8:40 a.m. Central (9:40 a.m. Eastern) from the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Freshman Daniel Bennett fired a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 (72-68) on Saturday and is sixth in the individual standings. Starting on hole 4 in his afternoon round, Bennett rebounded from a bogey on his opening hole to make a birdie on 5 and an eagle on the par-five 6th hole. After a bogey on 8 brought him back to 1-under in his round, he made birdies on holes 11, 17 and 2 to post a 4-under 68.
- Junior Tommy Morrison carded a two-round score of 2-under 142 (68-74) on Saturday and is tied for ninth. Starting on hole 6 in his morning round, he tallied birdies on holes 9 and 11 before a bogey on 14 put him at 1-under through his first nine holes. He rallied to post birdies on 17, 18 and 3 to close out his 4-under 68.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert posted a 36-hole total of 1-under 143 (73-70) on Saturday and is tied for 15th. Gilbert recorded seven birdies during his afternoon round of 2-under 70.
- Junior Christiaan Maas recorded a two-round score of 1-over 145 (68-77) on Saturday and is tied for 24th. Starting on hole 4 in his opening round, he recorded birdies on 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12 to climb to 5-under through his first nine holes. Maas made back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16, a birdie on 17 and another bogey on 18 to fall back to 3-under, but he responded with a birdie on 2 to finish at 4-under 68 in his opening round.
- Junior Luke Potter carded a 36-hole total of 5-over 149 (75-74) on Saturday and is tied for 54th. He recorded three birdies during his morning round.
