No. 4 Men’s Golf advances to NCAA Championship

Potter ties for third individually while the Longhorns finish third as a team to punch their ticket to Omni La Costa.
RENO, Nevada — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round score of 8-under-par 280 on Wednesday to place third in the NCAA Reno Regional at Montreux Golf and Country Club. With their top-five team finish at the NCAA Reno Regional, the Longhorns advance to the NCAA Championship on May 23-28 at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Texas extended its nation's-longest current streak of consecutive Division I Men's NCAA Golf Championship appearances to 18, dating back to the 2008 season. Oklahoma ranks second on the active streak list at 14.
The NCAA Reno Regional featured 14 teams and five individual players. The top five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Championship. The Longhorns recorded a 54-hole total of 8-under 856 (292-284-280). BYU claimed the team title with a three-round score of 15-under 849 (291-275-283), and No. 9 Virginia placed second at 11-under 853 (286-288-279). San Diego took fourth at 8-over 872 (295-293-284), and California was the final team in Reno to advance to nationals with a fifth-place finish at 9-over 873 (308-281-284).
Due to a frost delay in the Reno area in the morning, Wednesday's action did not begin until 11:30 a.m. Central (9:30 a.m. Pacific). Second-round play was completed around 1:30 p.m. Central (11:30 a.m. Pacific) on Wednesday, and the final round began at 3 p.m. Central (1 p.m. Pacific).
In the second round, Texas counted scores from junior Tommy Morrison (3-under 69), junior Luke Potter (1-under 71), freshman Daniel Bennett (even-par 72) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (even-par 72) to register a team score of 4-under 288 and moved into a tie for third place at even-par overall. During Wednesday's final round, the Longhorns counted scores from Potter (4-under 68), Bennett (3-under 69), junior Christiaan Maas (1-under 71) and Morrison (even-par 72) to record a team score of 8-under 280.
Paul Chang of Virginia claimed individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 10-under 206 (68-68-70), while BYU's Cole Ponich finished runner-up at 7-under 209 (71-71-67). Potter recorded a three-round score of 6-under 210 (71-71-68) and tied for third with Bryan Kim of Duke (71-72-67) at 6-under 210. Morrison placed in a three-way tie for seventh at 3-under 213 (72-69-72).
The Lineup
- Junior Luke Potter carded a 4-under 68 in his final round to tie for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 6-under 210 (71-71-68). After completing his 1-under 71 in the second round, Potter returned to post five birdies (holes 4, 8, 9, 10 and 18) against one bogey to close out his 4-under 68 in the third round. He recorded his fourth top-10 performance of the season.
- Junior Tommy Morrison fired an even-par 72 in his final round to tie for seventh with a three-round total of 3-under 213 (72-69-72). After completing his 3-under 69 in the second round, Morrison returned to tally five birdies (holes 1, 5, 13, 14 and 15) in his final round. He registered his eighth top-11 finish of the season.
- Junior Christiaan Maas recorded a 1-under 71 in his final round to tie for 15th with a 54-hole score of even-par 216 (72-73-71). After completing his 1-over 73 in the second round, Maas returned to post three birdies (holes 8, 9 and 17) against a pair of bogeys in his final round.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett carded a 3-under 69 in his final round to tie for 21st with a three-round total of 2-over 218 (77-72-69). After completing his even-par 72 in the second round, Bennett returned to register four birdies (holes 5, 9, 10 and 11) against just one bogey in his final round.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert tallied an even-par 72 in his final round to place 38th with a 54-hole total of 8-over 224 (80-72-72). After completing his even-par 72 in the second round, Gilbert returned to record three birdies (holes 6, 13 and 18) against three bogeys in his final round.
