No. 4 Men’s Golf in second place after opening day at Arizona N.I.T.

TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team posted a score of 27-under-par before play was suspended due to darkness on Monday to rest in second place after the opening day of the Arizona N.I.T. at Omni Tucson National Resort. Senior Luke Potter is currently solo second in the individual standings at 8-under overall through 12 holes completed in his second round.
Monday's play was suspended at 7 p.m. Central (6 p.m. Mountain) with the 13-team field through 12 or 13 holes in their respective second round. Second-round play is set to resume at 9:30 a.m. Central (8:30 a.m. Mountain) on Tuesday, Jan. 27, with the third and final round scheduled to begin immediately following the conclusion of second-round action.
In Monday's morning round, Texas counted scores from Potter (6-under 66), junior Jack Gilbert (4-under 68), senior Tommy Morrison (2-under 70) and graduate Matt Comegys (1-under 71) to post a team round of 13-under 275. During Monday afternoon's second round, the Longhorns are currently counting scores from Morrison (4-under through 12 holes), Comegys (4-under through 12 holes), Gilbert (3-under through 12 holes) and sophomore Daniel Bennett (3-under through 12 holes) for a team score of 14-under.
Texas is competing without senior All-American Christiaan Maas in this tournament. Maas claimed low amateur honors with his tie for 10th-place finish at the DP World Tour's Hero Dubai Desert Classic (Dubai, UAE) on Sunday, as he posted a 72-hole score of 6-under 282 (70-71-69-72).
Tournament host Arizona holds a one-stroke lead in the team standings at 28-under through 12 holes completed in the second round. Texas is in second place, just one stroke behind the Wildcats at 27-under. Saint Mary's (Calif.) is third at 15-under through 11-12 holes, and No. 25 BYU is fourth at 10-under through 11-12 holes.
Filip Jakubcik of Arizona owns the individual lead at 11-under through 12 holes in his second round. Potter is three strokes off the lead at 8-under through 12 holes, and there is a group of four individuals who are tied for third at 7-under that includes Connor Hamm (Arizona), Ethan Klose (New Mexico State), Tianyi Xiong (Arizona) and Texas' Gilbert. Morrison (tied for seventh at 6-under) and Comegys (tied for 10th at 5-under) are also in the top 10 in the individual standings.
The Lineup
- Senior Luke Potter carded a score of 8-under overall on Monday through 12 holes in his second round and is solo second in the individual standings. Starting on hole 2 in his morning round, he tallied birdies on holes 2, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 15 en route to a bogey-free 6-under 66. Potter is 2-under through 12 holes in his second round.
- Junior Jack Gilbert fired a score of 7-under overall through 12 holes in his second round and is tied for third in the individual standings. Starting on hole 1 in his morning round, he registered birdies on holes 2, 4, 8, 11 and 15 against just one bogey for his 4-under 68. Gilbert is 3-under through 12 holes in his second round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-five 10th hole.
- Senior Tommy Morrison recorded a score of 6-under overall through 12 holes in his second round and is tied for seventh. After a 2-under 70 in his morning round, he started his afternoon round on hole 3 and carded four birdies (holes 3, 8, 11 and 14) without a bogey to stand at 4-under through 12 holes.
- Graduate Matt Comegys registered a score of 5-under overall through 12 holes in his second round and is tied for 10th. Following a 1-under 71 in his morning round, he started his afternoon round on hole 1 and tallied five birdies (holes 3, 5, 8, 10 and 11) against one bogey to stand at 4-under through 12 holes.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett fired a score of 4-under overall through 12 holes in his second round and is tied for 14th. After a 1-under 71 in his morning round, he started his afternoon round on hole 2 and carded four birdies (holes 3, 4, 9 and 10) against one bogey to stand at 3-under through 12 holes.
- Competing as an individual, sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres posted a score of 4-under overall through 13 holes in his second round and is tied for 14th. Starting on hole 18 in his morning round, he made four birdies (holes 2, 11, 14 and 16) and an eagle on the par-five eighth hole against three bogeys to post a 3-under 69. Derbez Torres is 1-under through 13 holes in his second round.
